A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a link that connects two Private networks which is carried or transported over a Public network. An example of this would be a link between a company's main corporate network and the network at a branch office, connected over the Internet. Also called a "tunnel", this connection is secured by authenticating the devices at both ends of the tunnel and encrypting data sent between the two networks. This VPN tunnel allows applications to work over the Internet as if the user were directly connected to the corporate network.
Advantages of VPN
- Cost-effective alternative to using a dedicated leased line for a private network
- Uses industry standard encryption and authentication techniques
- Creates secure networks linking a main office with branch offices, telecommuters and traveling professionals
- Creates an application environment that operates as if you are directly connected to your main network
