Troubleshooting tips to successfully connect to the wireless network

Any wireless device connected to a router that is already configured and working should be able to access the Internet.  However, if you are having difficulty connecting some or all devices wirelessly, perform the following steps to resolve the issue:

Check the IP Address of the computer

An IP Address serves as the computer or device’s ID in the network and is automatically assigned by the router.  A valid IP Address is an indicator that the computer is connected and communicating to the router.  For instructions on how to check your computer’s IP Address, click

Verify the wireless settings of the Linksys router

There are two (2) wireless settings on the router that you need to identify when wirelessly connecting to the network:

  • Wireless Network Name or Service Set Identifier (SSID)
    It is the wireless network name being broadcasted by the router.  When you scan for available wireless networks on your computer, the SSID should be listed on your computer’s wireless configuration utility.
  • Wireless Security Settings
    It is the encryption method used to protect a wireless network from intruders.  This allows you to set up a password to secure your wireless network.

Verify if MAC filtering is enabled in your network

MAC filtering allows you to prevent or permit the MAC Addresses specific devices from accessing your network.  MAC stands for Media Access Control address.  This uniquely identifies your computer on the Internet or within the network.  There are no identical MAC Addresses.  If you are not able to access the Internet, the current MAC filtering may have not included your computer’s MAC Address in the list of devices allowed to access your network.  To learn more about MAC filtering, click

Disable the computer’s firewall

Antivirus programs also have firewall included in their features to add protection to the computer.  Some firewall software blocks communication to and from the computer.  Hence, your computer will not be able to acquire the IP Address assigned by the router.  In such cases, you will need to disable any firewall installed on your computer.  To learn how to disable Windows Firewall, go to Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Turn Windows Firewall on or off.

NOTE:  If your antivirus is not listed above, refer to your antivirus’ product documentation to learn how to configure its firewall settings.

Disable proxy settings

The proxy server setting is a medium between your computer and the Internet.  This sets a limitation to what websites your computer is allowed to access.  If a computer is connected to a router as a gateway for the Internet connection, it no longer needs to get any proxy settings to gain access.  To disable Internet Explorer proxy settings, launch Internet Explorer, click Tools > Internet Options > LAN settings.  To learn how to disable the proxy settings on a Mac OS®, click

Ping the router

A Ping test helps to trace the communication between the computer and the router.  The computer sends packets to the router and in return, the router sends out replies to validate the connection.  To learn how to check your computer’s connection to the router through Ping test, click

Ping the Internet

After pinging the router, you may proceed to checking the connection between the computer, router, and the Internet.  To check the computer’s connection to the Internet you should get valid replies when you perform a Ping test.  To learn how to check your connectivity to the Internet through Ping test, click

QUICK TIP:  If your computer is still having difficulties connecting to your wireless network but other wireless computers are able to do so, try to isolate the problem by connecting it to other wireless networks available.

If you are still experiencing issues with connecting to the wireless network with your computer after upgrading the firmware of your router, the driver of your computer’s wireless adapters may not be updated.  You may refer to your computer’s documentation to learn how to update the drivers of your computer’s adapters.
