Setting Up WPA Wireless Security on a Linksys Wireless Router

Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is a Wi-Fi security with better encryption compared to Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP).  It also gives you an option to use the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP), Advanced Encryption System (AES) or both.  This will prevent unauthorized access to your wireless network.  To know more about WPA/WPA2 security mode, click here.

To setup WPA Wireless Security on your Linksys router, follow the steps below:

Step 1:
Access the router’s web-based setup page.  For instructions, click here.

NOTE:  If you are using a Mac computer, click here.

Step 2:
On the setup page, click Wireless and select Wireless Security.

Step 3:
Select WPA Personal under the Security Mode drop-down menu.

NOTE:  If you are using a Wireless- G router, fill in the required fields on the 2.4 GHz Wireless Security.  For Wireless-N routers, fill in the 5 GHz Wireless Security fields.

NOTE:  If you are using a Wireless-N router, a pop up window will prompt you to select the WPA2 Personal type of encryption.  Click OK to continue with WPA2-Personal or click Cancel if you would like to opt for WPA Personal encryption.

Step 4:
Enter your desired Passphrase or Network Key.

NOTE:  In this example, “MySecretKey” is used.  This will serve as your network key whenever you want to connect your computer, or permit additional wireless devices to your network.  Keep your passphrase secure.
