Getting to know Parental controls

If you have children who spend more time on the Internet than they should, you can limit their Internet access using the Parental controls feature in the Linksys Connect software.  The computers that are restricted cannot access specific websites unless the user knows the password.

NOTE:  The latest product model releases of the Linksys Wi-Fi Routers have a built-in Parental controls feature in the web-based setup page.  To know more about setting up your router’s Parental controls using the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi, click here.

Before you configure the Parental controls feature, ensure the following:

 • The time zone on your router should be set correctly according to the time zone in your current location.  This lets the Parental controls feature block Internet access on the exact time that you specify.  To configure the time zone on your router, access your router’s web-based setup page, then go to the Basic Setup sub-tab under the Setup tab.  Click the Time Zone drop-down menu and select the appropriate time zone.  Once done, click Save Settings.

NOTE:  To learn how to access the web-based setup page on your computer, click here.  For Mac® users, click here.

•     Your router is connected to your main computer with an Ethernet cable when configuring the Parental controls.

To set up the Parental controls feature in Linksys Connect, you need to do the following:

Enable Parental controls and set a password
Rename the devices subjected to Parental controls
Change the password for Parental controls
Block Internet access

Enable Parental controls and set a password

Step 1:
Launch the Linksys Connect software, and select Parental controls.

NOTE:  To launch Linksys Connect on a Windows computer, go to Start > All Programs > Linksys Connect.  To launch Linksys Connect on a Mac® computer, navigate to the Applications folder in Go, and then start Linksys Connect.  If you need more help, click here.

Step 2:
Enter a password on the Parental controls password field and confirm it on the Verify password field.  Enter a secret question and its corresponding answer on the fields provided.

NOTE:  These are important security measures to recover a lost password.

Step 3:
Click  to confirm.

Step 4:
After saving, you can now select which computer within your network you want to restrict access.  Click OK to continue.

NOTE:  Parental controls in Linksys Connect can be set up for a total of five (5) computers or devices only.  If your computer is not listed on the screen, disable the firewall of your computer or make sure that the computer is connected to your network.

Rename the devices subjected to Parental controls

After selecting the computers or devices that will be added under Parental controls, you may also choose to rename them.  This is helpful in easily identifying the computers or devices that should be restricted.

Step 1:
On the Parental controls screen under the Restrict Internet access on section, select the name of the device that you want to edit then click Rename.

NOTE:  The Teen and Child options in this example are only available for Valet Hotspots.

Step 2:
Enter the new name you want for the device, and click Rename.

NOTE:  You will then see the new name of the device under the Parental controls screen.

Change the password for Parental controls

Changing the Parental controls password is helpful if the restricted users have come to know the current password.  To do this, follow the steps below:

Step 1:
On the Parental controls screen under the Restrict Internet access on section, click Change parental controls password.

NOTE:  The Teen and Child options in this example are only available for Valet Hotspots.

Step 2:
Enter your old password on the appropriate field, then enter the new one on the New password and Verify password fields.  Click Change to confirm.

NOTE:  The password should only be between 4-32 characters.  It is recommended to use a password that cannot be easily figured out by others.  An example of this would be a combination of alphanumeric characters.

QUICK TIP:  If you forgot your Parental controls password and can’t remember the answer to your Secret question, the only way to change the password is to manually reset and reconfigure your router.  To learn how to reset your router to its factory default settings, click here.
