Port Forwarding is a feature available in Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Routers that enables faster and safer sending and receiving of specific data requests from a computer to the Internet. With the Single Port Forwarding feature, you will apply rules on your router to let it know that one (1) particular port is open to receive a requested data.
Why do you need to Port Forward?
Port forwarding in general governs the flow of electronic signals to stick to the path of a specified port into your computer. When these electronic signals can easily find its way to its destination, it helps in increasing connectivity and speed especially when you’re hosting a computer game, or enhance the speed of a streaming or download.
1. Note the port you need to forward – The service ports have different assigned numbers depending on the type of service, hardware or application. Refer to your documentation or contact your device manufacturer for details.
2. Set Static IP address on the device – You will need to assign a Static IP address or a non-changing IP address so the port forwarding request will be sent and received from the same IP address.
Follow the steps below to set up Single Port Forwarding.
NOTE: This feature is not available on the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi App.
Log in to your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account. For instructions, click here.
On the Navigation pane under Router Settings, select Security.
On the Security window, select Apps and Gaming tab. Once done, select the Single Port Forwarding sub-tab and click the Add a new Single Port Forwarding button.
Enter the details of the device you want to port forward. Make sure to enter the Application name, External and Internal Ports, the Protocol to be used and the Device IP (the static IP of your device) correctly.
In the example below, we will port forward a Linksys WVC80N Home Monitoring Camera to enable its remote access feature, which means you can access your monitoring camera even when you’re away from your home network. This camera utilizes Port 80, which is the regular Internet port number (HTTPS) so the camera can be accessed over the Internet. The 192.168.1.11 represents the camera’s IP address.
QUICK TIP: It is recommended to set the Protocol to the default Both option, so it can utilize both TCP and UDP options to ensure a smooth and fast connectivity.
