LINKSYS SMART WI-FI SERVICE AND ACCOUNTS
 
1. What is Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account?
 
The Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account is a free service that comes with the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Routers.  It gives you secure access to your home network from a browser or mobile device.  You can instantly tap into your home network to check the connection status of your devices, give a guest access to the Internet, or block your child’s computer from accessing harmful websites.  You can even prioritize which devices on your network get the most bandwidth to eliminate lag times and buffering.
 
2. How is Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account different from the Linksys Connect software?
 
The Linksys Connect software is installed on a computer that is connected to your home network and all your home network settings can be accessed only while using that computer.  The Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account, on the other hand, runs on the web and you can access it from anywhere, using a secure login account.  So you can be on your home computer, your mobile phone on-the-go, or even on your computer at work, and still have access to your home router settings and network activity using Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account.
 
3. What is the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account for?
 
The Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account ensures secure access to your router, even when you're away from home.

4. Is there an additional cost associated with the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account?
 
No.  The Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account is free to Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Routers which include the following models:

1. What mobile devices work with the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi App?
 
The Linksys Smart Wi-Fi supports Android™, iOS phones and iPad® only.  To know more about the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account requirements, click here.
 
NOTE:  Mobile browsers are not supported to configure the router settings except for Safari® on an iPad.  You can configure your router or network settings through your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account using the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi App.  To know more, click here.
 
2. I bought a Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router before the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account was available.  How can I get it?
 
For users who have installed a Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router prior to the availability of the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account, you'll receive a message telling you that it's time to start using Linksys Smart Wi-Fi.  You'll be directed to the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account page where you can create your secure login account.  
 
3. What browser does the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account support?
 
To use the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account, it is recommended that you use the latest version of Chrome™, Internet Explorer®, Firefox® or Safari® (for Mac® computers).
 
LINKSYS SMART WI-FI ACCOUNT FEATURE AND TOOLS
 
1. What features are available in the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account?
  • The Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Tools are shown on the left panel of the page.  Simply click on a Tool to open it.  Tools and other useful information are found on the center of the page.  Tools are always-on representations of the features you want to monitor.  For example, if you want to verify that your network is online and quickly see how many devices are currently connected, you can do that using Tools.  You can also decide which Tools appear on the main page, turning them ON or OFF as you like. 
     
  • Router Settings, account information as well as access to Help are available on the page.

2. How do I access a different router?
 
Using your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account, you can access the network settings for multiple routers (networks).  For example, if you installed a router in your home and another router in your parents' home, then you created a Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account that is associated to both routers, you can access their settings as long as they are online.  You can open your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account and access your parents' router and make changes at any time, from anywhere.  The name of the router currently being accessed is shown at the top of the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account page.  If you want to select a different router, click the drop-down menu next to the selected router name.  The settings for that specific network will then be displayed.
 
3. What is Guest Access?
 
Guest Access is a way for guests in your home to use your Internet connection without having access to your other computers or devices in the network.  For example, your friends can access the Internet in your home, but they can’t access a printer or any shared files on your home computers.  It’s similar to a public Wi-Fi connection at a coffee shop or hotel.  When you set up your router, a secure Guest network will be created automatically.  For more information, click here.
 
4. What is Parental Controls?
 
Parental Controls is a feature that will allow you to limit what your kids can do online on their computers or other devices such as a gaming system with Internet access or smartphone.  Controls are set for specific devices, not for the entire home network.  This way, you can have different limits for each computers and devices used by younger children than for teens or adults in your home.  For more information, click here.
 
5. What is Media Prioritization?
 
Media Prioritization lets you decide which devices or applications get network bandwidth priority.  For example, if you have a smart TV or a computer that you often stream movies with, you can move that device to the top of the priority list so that it gets the bandwidth it needs to keep movies running smoothly.  The prioritized device won’t have to compete with other devices on your network for bandwidth then.  For more information, click here.
 
6. What is Speed Test?
 
The Speed Test feature allows you to see your current upload and download speeds to and from your home network.  This is only available when the device you're using to access your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account is connected to your own home network.  For more information, click here.
 
7. What is USB / External Storage?
 
A USB storage device, also called a NAS or Network Attached Storage, lets you store and share content across your network.  The storage device connects directly to the USB port at the back of your router and is typically used to store and share videos, music, photos, and other media.  For more information, click here.
 
8. What is FTP Server?
                                                                                                                 
A File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a network protocol that is commonly used to transfer and exchange files from one host to another host over the Internet.  On the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account, you can access the folders on your storage device locally or remotely from anywhere you have an Internet connection using the FTP server.  You can access the content using a web browser or FTP software.  For more information on how to configure this, click here.
 
9. What is Media Server?
 
A Media Server lets you share content on your USB device across your network.  Your router can act as a media server if it has a USB storage drive attached and if you have UPnP AV-enabled or DLNA-certified devices in your home.  These include digital media players, gaming consoles with a built-in media player, and digital picture frames.  For more information on how to configure this, click here.

1. How do I access my home router and network settings when I'm away from home?
 
One of the greatest benefits of Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account is being able to access your home network settings and activities even when you're not home.  Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account is on the web so you can access it anywhere you have Internet access.  Simply open a web browser, enter "linksyssmartwifi.com" in the Address bar and log into your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account.  To know what features are available when connecting to your router remotely, click here.
 
2. How do I manage my kids' Internet access?
 
Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account offers free Parental Controls that will allow you to limit access to the Internet and specific websites for individual devices.  For example, you can set Internet restrictions on devices used by your children and not affect Internet access on the devices used by the adults in your home.  To learn more about Parental Controls, click here.
 
3. How many guests would be allowed to use the Guest Access at most?
 
The Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account allows 50 guests.
 
4. How many sites can be blocked per device in the Block specific sites of the Parental Controls feature at most?
 
You will be able to block up to 10 sites per device.

ADVANCED TROUBLESHOOTING
 
1. Why do I see multiple Linksys Wireless-N Extenders in my Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account dashboard?
 
In any environment with a Linksys range extender and a Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, you will see similar wireless device icons up to three (3) times in the Device List Tool of the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi.  This may be due to the following:
  • The device has an Ethernet adapter and has been hardwired to the router.
  • The same device also has a wireless adapter and has connected wirelessly to the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router.
  • The same device with the wireless adapter has connected to the RE1000. 
To make it easier to identify each connection, you should first determine the MAC address of each wired and wireless adapter as the device shows up in Device List.  To prevent confusion, you can edit the friendly name of each Tool per device (ex:  PC Ethernet, PC Wireless, PC RE1000, etc.).

QUICK TIP:  Some Linksys Smart Wi-Fi devices have the Network Map Tool instead of the Device List Tool.  To learn more about this feature, click here.
 
2. How can I backup my configuration file for a router that supports Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account?
 
Backing up your router configuration file can only be done using a computer browser and you must be within the router's network.  This option is not available when connected remotely via the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account services.  The Backup option can be found under the Troubleshooting Tool in the Diagnostics tab.  For more instructions, click here.
 
3. Can I block HTTPS websites under Parental Controls for the "Block specific sites" feature?
 
No.  Only HTTP (port 80) URLs can be blocked.
 
4. What will happen if I run the Linksys Connect Setup Software on a second wireless computer after setting up the router in the first computer?

The Linksys Connect Setup Software will prompt you to connect to a configured router.  Make sure that you have the wireless network name (SSID), wireless password, and router password.
 
5. Will I lose my gigabit connectivity when I get the automatic upgrade to Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account?
 
No.  Once your router has been upgraded to Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account, you may experience temporary disconnection from the Internet until you have configured your settings correctly.  If you observe that your Gigabit connectivity has issues, you only need to reset the router and recheck the configuration settings.  For a detailed instruction on how to reboot and reset your router, click here.
 
6. Does the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account allow you to remotely access computer files on your home network?
 
No.  You will not have access to the computer files that are connected to the router.  You can only access computer files if you enabled VPN or VLAN connection.

7. If I enable the MAC Filtering feature of my router, will it affect the devices connected to my Guest network?

8. What can I do in case I encounter issues while using some of the Tools in the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account?
 
You can do any of the steps below to resolve issues using the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account:
  • Close Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account then re-open it.
  • Temporarily disable any security on your computer such as your anti-virus or Windows firewall.  You can re-enable them after using Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account.
  • Use another computer that is also connected to your network and continue using the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account.
9. Is there a way to clear the list of devices in the Device List Tool?

Yes.  The Clear Device List button is a feature found in EA4500 v3 that clears all device information and reboots the router.  Clicking this button will reboot the router and disconnect any Wi-Fi devices momentarily.
 
NOTE:  If the Device List is corrupted or overloaded with devices that are no longer there, you can click on this button.
