Configuring Captive Portal in LAPAC1200 or LAPAC1750

This article will show you how to configure Captive Portal in LAPAC1200 or LAPAC1750.  Follow the instructions below to learn more.
 
Step 1:
Make sure that the firmware version of your LAPAC1200 or LAPAC1750 is 1.0.07 or higher.  If not, download the latest file from www.linksys.com/support.
 
Step 2:
Open the web-based setup page of your LAPAC and select the Captive Portal option.  Then, click Global Configuration from the drop-down navigation pane.

Step 3:
Check Enable for Captive Portal and click Save.

Step 4:
Click Portal profiles under Captive Portal.
 
NOTE:  A profile is a defined set parameters of login authentication, landing page, session timeout, etc. for your guest network.  System supports up to two (2) profiles.

Step 5:           
Select a Profile Name from Captive Portal Profile.  There are two (2) pre-defined Profile Names in the drop-down list.  Select one (1) and go to next step.
 
NOTE:  Profile 1 is used here as an example.

Step 6:           
Configure the parameter associated to Profile 1.  For the definition of each parameter, click the Help link on the top right corner of your screen to see the details.  Click Save once your configuration is done.

NOTE:  In this example, authentication is set to Password Only.  On the other hand, if the Authentication is Local, you need to configure the Local User and Local Group first as the authentication will check against the user database locally.  Click here for instructions on how to do so.

Step 7:           
Click Web Customization under Captive Portal to create your own login splash screen for the guest network. 
 
NOTE:  If the default splash screen meets your needs, you can skip Steps 7, 8 and 9 then go directly to Step 10.

Step 8:           
Select the Profile Name that you like to customize the splash page.  One Profile maps to one customized login screen.  In this example, Profile 1 is configured in Portal Profiles page.  Select Profile 1 from the drop-down list.

Step 9:           
Configure the parameters for Profile 1.  Click Help on the top right corner of your screen if you need assistance with each parameter.  Use the Preview button to confirm that your customization is what you desire to display.  Click User-added image once configuration is done to apply your changes.

NOTE:  Below is the default authentication page if you use the default settings.  It’s highly recommended you customize your own terms of use based on your business objective.

Step 10:           
Click Profile Association under Captive Portal.  You need to associate Profile 1 to the corresponding SSID because both the profile and web customization configurations are done.

Step 11:           
Select the Wireless Radio and SSID that you want this profile to associate.  Any users associated to this particular SSID will be required to accept terms of use and pass login credential before they can get Internet access.  For this example, Profile 1 is associated to Radio 1 (2.4 GHz Radio) and Guest SSID.  Click Save to apply the changes you made.

Step 12:           
Use any wireless client device, e.g. laptop, tablet, mobile phone to connect to Guest SSID.  After the client connects, it will get an IP address assigned, but has no Internet access yet.

Step 13:           
Open a browser on the client device and type in any website URL e.g. www.linksys.com.  The browser will redirect to the splash screen you customized in Step 9.

Step 14:           
Enter the Password as Profile 1’s authentication is set to Password Only.  If you configured a different authentication type in Step 6, login credential criteria may change accordingly.  Remember to accept the terms of use before clicking the Connect button.

Step 15:           
The You have logged on successfully page will show up once authentication is passed.  Then, screen will redirect to your company website afterwards if your profile has Landing Page Enabled and Promotion URL configured.  If you select Redirect to Original URL, screen will display whatever website that user typed in the beginning when browser was opened.  Internet access is granted to this particular client starting now.
