Changing the range extender’s administrator password

When accessing the range extender’s web-based setup page, a login screen will appear requiring a password.  By default, the range extender’s administrator password is admin.  It is recommended to change the default password for security purposes.  This article will guide you on how to change your range extender's administrator password.
 
Click on your range extender’s model number below to know how to change its administrator password:
 

Linksys RE6400, RE6250, RE6350, RE6300, RE6700, RE3000W v2, or RE4100W
Linksys RE1000, RE2000, RE3000W, RE4000W, or RE6500

 
Linksys RE6400, RE6250, RE6350, RE6300, RE6700, RE3000W v2, or RE4100W

Step 1:
Open a browser to log in to the web-based setup page of your range extender.

QUICK TIP:  There are three methods to log in:

  • Enter "http://extender.linksys.com" in the Address bar.
  • Enter the range extender’s IP address.​
NOTE:  If your range extender is not yet configured, its default IP address is 192.168.1.1.  Once your range extender is already configured you will need to look up the IP address in your router’s DHCP Client table.
  • For Linksys RE6400, RE6300 and RE6700, enter "http://RE6xx0-xxx" for Windows® or "http://RE6xx0-xxx.local" for Mac®,  where xxx are the last three characters of the range extender's MAC address.  For the RE6250, enter "http://RE6250" for Windows and "http://RE6250.local" for Mac.​  For Linksys RE6350, enter "http://RE6350" for Windows and "http://RE6350.local" for Mac.​ 

Step 2:
Enter your range extender's admin Password.  If you have changed your Password, enter that instead.  Otherwise, enter the default password which is "admin" in the field, then click Login.

Step 3:
On the web-based setup page, click Management under Administration.

Step 4:
Enter your preferred administrator password for the range extender in the Extender Password and Re-enter to confirm fields.

Step 5:
Click Save.

 

Linksys RE1000, RE2000, RE3000W, RE4000W, or RE6500

Step 1:
Access the range extender’s web-based setup page.  For instructions, click 
here.
 
Step 2:
Click Administration.  Enter the new password in the Extender Password and Re-enter to confirm fields under the Management page.

Step 3:
Click Save Settings to apply the changes. 
 
NOTE:  Your range extender will then restart and ask you to enter the new password.  Enter your new password in the authentication box and use it the next time you log in to the range extender's web-based setup page.
