Manually upgrading the firmware of the Linksys WiFi Router or X-series Gateway

Upgrading the Linksys WiFi router or Linksys X-series Gateway’s firmware will provide a quick fix for issues that users may have encountered. This includes more stable connectivity and functionality enhancements to the router.
Here are a few tips and tricks before you begin the upgrade process:

For stable connectivity and to prevent upgrade failures, make sure that your computer is connected to the router using an ethernet cable. Upgrading the firmware via WiFi may cause permanent damage to the router if the internet connection becomes unstable during the process.

Use another browser if your default browser doesn’t work. Alternatively, you can use another computer to perform the upgrade.

Temporarily disable any computer firewall to ensure that the upgrade will not be disrupted.

If your device has a storage link and a storage device is connected to it, make sure to safely remove the storage device before you upgrade the Linksys WiFi router or Linksys X-series Gateway’s firmware as this may result in data loss.

Make sure that you have created a backup configuration of your router settings for easy reconfiguration.

To upgrade the Linksys WiFi router or Linksys X-series Gateway’s firmware, you need to complete the following steps:

Downloading the firmware
Performing and completing the firmware upgrade

Downloading the firmware

Only download the specific firmware and version for your device. For example, if your router’s hardware version is 2, only download and upgrade the firmware for a version 2 router. To learn how to check your device’s hardware version, these are the things that you need to do.

1. Visit the Linksys Support Site. Enter the model number of your product in the search field then press [Enter].

2. Click Get Support then click on DOWNLOADS / FIRMWARE.

If you don’t know the model number and the hardware version of your device, click How do I find my model number?.

3. Click the hardware version of your device.

4. Select the firmware for your device then click Download.

It will be saved automatically in the downloads folder. The file name may vary depending on the firmware file of your device.

5. If the firmware file you have downloaded is in a .zip format, right-click the file and click on Extract Here.

If you're using a Mac® computer, double-click on the .zip file to begin the extraction process.

Performing and completing the firmware upgrade

1. Access the router's web interface.
2. Select the Administration tab and click the Firmware Upgrade sub-tab.

3. Select Manual Upgrade.

4. Click Browse then select the .bin file that you downloaded earlier then click Open.

If you’re using a Mac computer, select the .bin file and click Choose.

5. Click the Start Upgrade button.

Once the upgrade is completed, the message Upgrade is successful will appear. Once you are prompted to reboot the router, click Continue.

6. Reset your Linksys router then turn it OFF for 10 seconds before plugging it back in.

Resetting the router will cause it to delete all of its configured settings and change it back to factory default. You may now reconfigure the router’s settings to enable internet access and WiFi connection.
If you have created a backup configuration of your router settings before upgrading the firmware, you may choose to restore the settings automatically so you don’t have to manually reconfigure the router.
