A portable storage device is a hard disk drive that can save digital data up to a limited quantity. This could be a USB flash disk, media player, mobile or smartphone, or any type of device that can hold a specific amount of computer data. It can be connected to your computer through a USB port and can be accessed locally or over the network. This article will provide you with instructions on how to connect a portable storage device to your network for easy access.

NOTE: In this process, Windows 7 was used.
Connect the portable storage device to the USB port of your computer.
IMPORTANT: Take note of the computer name as it will be used to access the shared portable storage device on your network.
Click the Start button and then click Computer. The portable storage device should be displayed.
Right-click on the storage device, then select Share with. Click Advanced sharing….
Click the Advanced Sharing… button.
Check the Share this folder option. Click Add then enter a name for the folder or drive you want to share. Click Permissions.
NOTE: In this example, Shared_Storage is entered as the name of the portable storage device.
Select the Everyone option. This drive will be accessible to everyone connected to your network.
Check the Allow boxes next to Full Control, Change or Read option. Click the Apply button then click OK to close the User Settings window.
Click OK to close the Permission window.
Click Close to exit the Advanced Sharing window.
The portable storage device is now connected and shared over the network.
In another computer that is connected to your network, click the Pearl button then click Control Panel.
Click Network and Internet.
Click View network computers and devices.
Click the computer name.
The shared drive should be displayed.
IMPORTANT: After using, make sure to perform the Safely Remove process or properly eject your portable storage device before plugging it out the computer’s USB port to avoid the saved data from being corrupted.
