- Setting up the range expander through a hardwired connection
The Linksys WRE54G Wireless-G Range Expander can be configured using a hardwired connection aside from the setup CD that comes with the device. To configure the range expander manually, follow the steps below:
i. Checking the wireless settings on the wireless router or access point
ii. Connecting the computer to the range expander
iii. Setting up static IP on the computer
iv. Configuring the Linksys wireless range expander
The Linksys wireless range expander and the wireless router or access point’s wireless settings should match in order for them to work properly. You must first identify the wireless settings of your router:
• Wireless network name (SSID)
• Wireless Channel
• Wireless security mode (WPA/WPA2 Personal or WEP)
• Network key or passphrase
NOTE: If you’re using a non-Linksys wireless router or access point, refer to your router’s documentation or contact your router’s manufacturer for support.
Using an Ethernet cable, connect the range expander to the computer. This will enable you to access its web-based setup page.
NOTE: Images may vary depending on the type of computer and range expander you are using. In this example, a laptop computer is used.
You will need to set a static IP on the Ethernet adapter of your computer to be able to communicate with your range expander. To learn how to set static IP on your computer, click here.
NOTE: Set the IP address to the 192.168.1.x range where x represents a number between 2 to 255.
Once your range expander and computer are connected, you should be able to access the range expander’s web-based setup page.
To configure the range expander’s wireless settings, follow the steps below:
QUICK TIP: For optimum performance, it is recommended to use the Wireless-G range expander with a Wireless-G router.

The range expander should now be synchronized with the router. To diagnose connectivity to the range expander, check the LINK and ACTIVITY lights and ensure they are lit up blue.
