SOFTWARE INFORMATION

1.  Where can I download the VPN client utility to create a VPN tunnel with the router?

Below are examples of some VPN clients that you can download:
  • Shrew Soft VPN Client (Windows® and Linux®), click here.
  • IPSecuritas for Mac OS X®, click here.
  • OpenVPN Connect for iPhone®/iPad®, click here.
  • OpenVPN Connect for Androidâ„¢, click here.
QUICK TIP:  You can also use other VPN client utilities such as TheGreenBow or SafeNet.

2.  What are the pros and cons of DMZ Range versus DMZ Subnet?

It depends on the IP address from the ISP.  If the subnet of DMZ IP is different from the subnet of the WAN IP, users have to use the Subnet mode for configuring DMZ port.  If the subnet of DMZ IP is the same with the subnet of WAN IP, users have to use the Range mode for configuring DMZ port.

3.  I tried to sign up a new DDNS account at 3322.org, but I was redirected to pubyun.com.  What’s going on?

This is an issue with 3322.org, therefore any new customers who want to use 3322.org will not be able to sign up.  If you have an existing account with 3322.org you will be able to use the feature in the router by entering your existing credentials.  For information, click here.

TROUBLESHOOTING

1.  What can I do if I forgot my router login username and password?

Press the Reset button for over 20 seconds.  This will reset the router username and password to admin/admin.

2.  How can I configure a VPN tunnel if my Internet Service Provider (ISP) only provides dynamic IP?

You can use Dynamic Domain Name System (DDNS) service to translate your dynamic IP address to a fixed domain name so that the VPN tunnel won’t disconnect due to IP address changed.  You can go to www.DynDNS.org to register a domain name before configuring a DDNS function.

3.  What is the difference between Port Forwarding and Port Triggering?

Port Forwarding - is used to set up public services on your network.  When users from the internet make certain requests to your network, the router can forward those requests to the specified computers in your local network.

Port Triggering - opens a port range for services which use alternative ports to communicate between both sides.  The router will forward the incoming packets to the assigned LAN host.

4.  When inbound traffic enters the server through forwarding, which WAN port does the server reply the traffic through on the Linksys LRT224?

The routing mechanism will identify the source WAN port of the inbound traffic.  If the traffic enters via WAN1, the server will also reply to the source via WAN1.

5.  Does the Linksys Business Gigabit VPN Routers support standard IPsec VPN protocol?  How about the compatibility?

IPsec VPN is a global security standard.  The Linksys Gigabit VPN Routers follows Virtual Private Network Consortium (VPNC) protocol standard and passed many interoperability tests with several well-known brand of VPN devices.

6.  How do I prevent intranet users from changing their own IP addresses without authorization and causing network failure?

You can use IP and MAC Binding by assigning a specified IP address to a specified device in the intranet through this feature.  If the computer user changes the IP address without authorization, the computer won’t get an IP address from the DHCP server.  You can also check the Block MAC address list for invalid IP addresses.  Computers with blocked IP addresses will not be allowed by the router.

7.  How can I visit some specified website or network service through one specified WAN port of the Linksys LRT224 without load balance?

Some special network service cannot support multi-WAN such as on-line gaming.  You can make the outbound for specific destination leave the router from a specified WAN port through protocol binding or static routing.

8.  How do I keep the connection alive if it disconnects unusually?  And what is the interval?

By default, the Network Service Detection is enabled.  The feature will try to re-connect to network every 30 seconds after unusual disconnection.  If your ISP’s network service indeed doesn’t fail, the service will be recovered in one minute.  The VPN will be also re-connected automatically.

9.  What is the difference between Link Failover and Load Balance (Linksys LRT224)?

Link Failover - can choose one of both WAN ports as the primary interface and the other as backup.  In normal time, the traffic is transported from the primary WAN port.  The backup WAN will take over the traffic when the primary WAN fails.

Load Balance
- both WAN ports work simultaneously.  The traffic will be balanced between two  ports according to the bandwidth proportion between two WAN ports which is configured in Configuration > System Management > Bandwidth Management.

10.  What authentication types are supported by the router if I want to activate the email alert feature?

The Linksys Business Gigabit VPN Routers support four types of authentication for email server which are None, Login Plain, TLS and SSL.

11.  One of my Internet Service Providers gave a modem router, so one of the WAN interfaces has a private IP address.  Will dual WAN load balancing work in this configuration?

Yes, it will work as long as NSD does not report failure of network service, the load balance mechanism will continue to be effective.  When one WAN interface fails, the router will direct all traffic to the other working WAN interface automatically.

12.  Is there any client-side configuration needed when transferring files from my laptop to the computers in the remote network over the VPN tunnel?

Users can transfer files via Windows Network Neighborhood function.  For the VPN server, Linksys Business Gigabit VPN Routers have the NetBIOS broadcast option to support Windows Network Neighborhood function.  However, some VPN client utilities such as TheGreenBow, SafeNet and Shrew do not have this option.  Users cannot access Windows Network Neighborhood via those VPN client utilities.

13.  I have a Linksys LRT214 which has a single WAN port.  In the Network Service Detection, there is an option Failover to the backup WAN, does my router support Failover?

No, this model does NOT support Failover.  The option Log the event and failover to the backup WAN is only to trigger logging events should the WAN connection fail.

14.  Why does the port setup page of the Linksys LRT214 and LRT224 not have the option for 100M?

When Auto Negotiation is enabled, the Ethernet peers will try 1000 Mbps first.  If the user wants to manually lower the speed to 100M or 10M, Full or Half Duplex, he/she can disable Auto Negotiation first.

The Linksys LRT214 and LRT224 currently do not support Half Duplex for 1000 Mbps, thus the web-based set up page does not show the 1000M option.

15.  Can I change the default OpenVPN port on my Linksys LRT214/LRT224 router?

Yes, you can use any port between the range of 1 to 65535.  However, the TCP/UDP ports 80, 443, 10443 and 60443 are system reserved ports, do not use these for OpenVPN setup.

NOTE:  The default OpenVPN Server port is 1194.

16.  Is enabling Multicast Passthrough the same as enabling IGMP Proxy?

Yes, enabling Multicast Passthrough is the same as enabling IGMP Proxy.
