Most Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) providers use Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) to establish Internet connections for end-users. To set up a Linksys router, you need to enable PPPoE on the router’s web-based setup page.
To setup a Linksys router with a DSL connection, you need to perform four steps:
Connect the Broadband modem to the computer using an Ethernet cable without the router installed and make sure that the Internet connection is active. If not, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

After ensuring that you have an active Internet connection, connect the modem to the router’s Internet port and the computer to any of the four Ethernet ports. For instructions, click here.
After connecting your modem and PC to the router, check the lights on the front panel of the router. For instructions, click here.

For Telstra DSL Internet users, contact Telstra to confirm your DSL PPPoE account settings. There should be no other machine (modem or computer) running PPPoE client upon doing this procedure.
Access the router’s web-based setup page. For instructions, click here.
NOTE: If you are using Mac to access the router's web-based setup page, click here.
Look for the Local IP Address and change it to 192.168.2.1.
NOTE: If the screen on your router’s web-based setup page looks different, click here.
Renew the computer’s IP Address. For instructions, click here.
Access the router’s web-based setup page using 192.168.2.1 as the IP Address.
On the Setup page, click Status and check if Internet IP Address has numbers or values.
NOTE: If the Internet IP Address has numbers, the computer should now be able to access the Internet.
NOTE: If the IP Address is all zeroes (0.0.0.0) click first then click . If the IP Address is still all zeroes, enable PPPoE on the router. To enable PPPoE on the router, please follow the instructions below.
Under the Setup tab, set the Internet Connection Type to PPPoE.
Enter the Username and Password that your ISP provided, including the domain in the User Name field if necessary. For example, “email@example.com” where isp is the name of your Internet Service Provider.
Click the Status tab then look for Login Status and check if it says Connected. If it’s connected, you should be able to access the Internet.
NOTE: If the Login Status says Disconnected, click then check if you’re receiving an error message. To resolve PPPoE error messages, click here.
