Troubleshooting iPhone® and iPod® wireless connectivity to a Linksys router

Connection problems may occur when using an iPhone® or an iPod® due to certain factors.  This article will list some of common problems and the solutions on how to resolve these issues.

The iPhone® or iPod® is receiving a very low signal from the router
You have entered the wrong wireless network password
The wireless network is MAC filtered
The SSID Broadcast of the wireless network is disabled

The iPhone® or iPod® is receiving a very low signal from the router

Low wireless signal from the router is one of the most common reasons which cause dropping connectivity and difficulty when connecting to a wireless network.


  • Try moving closer to where the router is located, and check the Wi-Fi signal bar indicator on your iPhone® and iPod® if the signal received has increased.  However, ensure that your iPhone® or iPod® is not within the 18-inch radius around the router as this is considered a wireless dead zone.
  • Make sure that there are no physical obstructions or wireless interferences between the wireless router and your iPhone® or iPod®.  Physical obstructions include walls, furniture and other fixtures blocking the signal from the router.  Wireless interferences may be baby monitors, cordless telephones and microwave ovens.

You have entered the wrong wireless network password

When connecting to a secured wireless network, make sure to enter the correct password or wireless network key.


  • If you have administrative access to the Linksys router, check the wireless password.  For instructions, click here.

    NOTE:  The wireless password is case-sensitive (ex. ABC is different from abc).
  • If you have changed the password of your wireless network, tap the arrow sign next to the SSID of the network you are connecting to, then select Forget this network.  You may try reconnecting your mobile device to the network using the new password.
  • Try resetting the network settings on your iPhone® or iPod® by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

    NOTE:  Resetting the network settings will clear your network preferences including stored passwords, VPN and APN settings.
  • Restart your wireless device and try reconnecting to the wireless network.

The wireless network is MAC filtered

When the wireless MAC filter is enabled on a Linksys router, access to the wireless network is limited to the devices which are allowed by the administrator.  The registered MAC addresses of wireless devices are either blocked or allowed access to the wireless network.


  • If you have administrative access to the Linksys router, check the wireless MAC filter setting of your Linksys router.  Access the router’s web-based setup page and click Wireless > Wireless MAC Filter.

The SSID Broadcast of the wireless network is disabled

Disabling the SSID Broadcast of a Linksys router hides your wireless network from wireless devices.   When a wireless device scans the area for available wireless networks, it will not appear on the list and you have to enter the network name manually under Other Networks.


Connecting your iPhone® to a wireless network with disabled SSID Broadcast

QUICK TIP:  You will need the exact wireless network name of the network you're trying to connect to, as well as the security mode and the password if applicable.
