No Internet connection with a WPC54G and Windows XP

This can be caused by several problems.  Follow these steps to determine what problem you are experiencing.

Have signal no Internet connection
If you have signal strength but no Internet connection, please follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Start button and click on the Run option.
  2. When the “Run” window opens, type in ncpa.cpl into the “Open” field.
  3. When the “Network Connections” window opens, double click on your Wireless Network Connection icon.
  4. When the “Wireless Network Connection Status” window opens, click on the Properties button.
  • If the “Wireless Network Connection” window opens, and not the “Wireless Network Connection Status” window, please see the “No signal strength” scenario.
  1. After the “Wireless Network Connection Properties” window opens, click on the Wireless Networks tab.
  2. When the “Wireless Networks” area appears, go to the “Preferred networks” pane and click on your SSID, then click the Properties button.
  • The default SSID for all Linksys Wireless Access Points and Wireless Routers is linksys.
  1. When the “SSID Properties” window opens, uncheck the This key is provided for me automatically box.
  • A network not using WEP
i.  If your network is not using WEP, then uncheck the Data Encryption WEP option or change the “Data encryption” option to Disabled.

  1. Click the OK button on the “SSID Properties” window, and then click the OK button on the “Wireless Network Connection Properties” window.
  2. Power down your computer and unplug the WPC54G.  Power up your computer, and when Windows loads, plug the WPC54G back in and you should be able to get online.

No signal strength

If you do not have signal strength, please use the following instructions:

  1. Click on the Start button and click on the Run option.
  2. When the “Run” window opens, type in ncpa.cpl into the “Open” field.
  3. When the “Network Connections” window opens, double click on your Wireless Network Connection icon.
  4. When the “Wireless network Connection” window opens, you will see one of the following:
  • The SSID of your Wireless Access Point or Wireless Router
i.  If you see the SSID of your Wireless Access Point or Wireless Router, then click on the SSID and either check the box for Allow me to connect to the selected network, even though it is not secure, or input your Wireless Networks WEP Key into the “Network Key” and “Confirm network key” field.

ii.  Click on the Connect button.
  • Nothing shows up
i.  If nothing shows up please try power cycling your Wireless Access Point or Wireless Router.

ii.  If power cycling does not help, try changing the channel on your Wireless Access Point or Wireless Router.


Note: You can find information on changing the channel of your Wireless Access Point or Wireless Router’s documentation.
  1. Shut down your computer and take the WPC54G out.
  2. Restart the computer and plug the WPC54G back in.
  3. If you do not get signal again, try a different channel on your Wireless Access Point or Wireless Router and repeat these steps.
