2. Does the Linksys RE3000W have a built-in DHCP server?

Yes.  However, this is only for configuration and troubleshooting purposes.  When your extender does not detect a DHCP server in the network, it will temporarily change from a DHCP client to a DHCP server.  It will default to 192.168.1.1 address and provide an IP Address scheme of 192.168.1.x for clients who are associated to the extender.  When this occurs, you can connect a computer directly to the extender and log in to the web-based setup page for further troubleshooting purposes.  Once the extender has detected a DHCP server in the network, it will return to being a DHCP client and will obtain an IP Address from your existing DHCP server in the network (typically your router).

Here are some things that you can do to resolve connection issues:
  • For first-time setup, you may need to place the extender closer to the router.  After you’ve set up your extender, you can unplug it and move it to the final location.
  • To reduce signal obstructions, try alternate locations for the router and the extender.
  • Avoid placing the router and extender near metal objects, masonry walls, and reflective surfaces such as glass or mirrors.
  • Avoid placing the router and extender near other electronics that may cause signal interference.
  • If you’re using WPS to connect, wait until the WPS indicator stops blinking before attempting another connection.
2.  What should I do when I experience intermittent connection problems?

Plug in or reposition the range extender midway between your router and the area where you wish to extend the connection to.  Ensure to have at least 50% of your router’s Wi-Fi signal at the location where you place the range extender.
