Changing the Operation Mode on your Linksys Range Extender

The latest Linksys Range Extenders can be set up as access points.  When in Access Point mode, they can be easily changed to Range Extender mode, and vice versa.  This can be done by changing the Operation Mode in your range extender's web-based setup page.

This article will give you instructions on how to switch between the two Operation Modes.  These are the Linksys range extenders that have the Operation Mode setting:
  • Linksys RE7000 Max-Streamâ„¢ AC1900+ Wi-Fi Range Extender
  • Linksys RE6800 AC1750 Wi-Fi Range Extender
  • Linksys RE6700 AC1200 AMPLIFY Dual-Band Wi-Fi Range Extender

  • Linksys RE6300 AC750 BOOST Wi-Fi Range Extender

Switching from Range Extender mode to Access Point mode
 
To use your range extender as an access point, you need to connect it to your router or switch using an ethernet cable and configure its settings.  Setting it to Access Point mode will give you better Wi-Fi speeds by reducing interference and other factors that Wi-Fi experience.  To do this, follow the steps below:

 
Step 1:
Connect to your range extender's Wi-Fi.

Step 2:
Access "http://extender.linksys.com" on a web browser.


Step 3:
Enter your range extender's admin password, then click Login.  You will be taken to the Basic Settings screen.

NOTE:  If you weren't automatically taken to the Basic Settings screen, go to Wireless > Basic Settings.

Step 4:
Under Operation Mode, click Change.
 
Step 5:
Connect an ethernet cable from your range extender to your router.  This is required before changing the Operation Mode.
 
Step 6:
Under Change Operation Mode, select Access Point (Wired Range Extender) then click the Change button.

Change the settings as you prefer or leave the default settings as is, then click Change.

Wait while your range extender reboots.  You should have now successfully switched it to Access Point mode.

Range Extender mode enables your range extender to extend your Wi-Fi range without using any cables.  To learn how to switch from Access Point mode to Range Extender mode, follow these steps:

 
Step 1:
Connect to your range extender's Wi-Fi.

Step 2:
Access "http://extender.linksys.com" on a web browser.


Step 3:
Enter your range extender's admin password, then click Login.  You will be taken to the Basic Settings screen.

NOTE:  If you weren't automatically taken to the Basic Settings screen, go to Wireless > Basic Settings.

Step 4:
Under Operation Mode, click Change.


Step 5:
Under Change Operation Mode, select Wireless Range Extender then click the Change button.

Step 6:
Select your Wi-Fi from the list.

Step 7:
Enter your Wi-Fi password in the field, then click Next.
 
Step 8:
Change the settings as you prefer or leave the defaults set, then click Change.

You may now disconnect the ethernet cable connecting your router and range extender.

Wait while your range extender reboots.  You should have now successfully switched it to Range Extender mode.
