Setting up PPTP on LRT214/LRT224 and Windows computer

Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is a VPN protocol that allows the Point to Point Protocol (PPP) to be tunneled through an IP network.  It encrypts the data with GRE (Generic route encapsulation) and uses the TCP port 1723. 
 
What are the requirements in setting up PPTP?

 
i.  User name and Password for both the Gateway and Client.
ii.  WAN IP address of the VPN server
iii.  PPTP Software 

Below are the instructions in setting up PPTP on your Linksys Gigabit VPN router and the windows computer

Step 1:
Open a web browser and access the router's web-based setup page.  To learn how, click
here.
 
Step 2:
Click on Configuration > VPN then click PPTP Server.

 
 
Step 3:
Check the Enable PPTP Server box.

 
 
Step 4:
Under Range Start and Range End, enter the range of IP addresses you wish to have access to the server.
 
NOTE:  The LAN IP address range for PPTP VPN clients should be outside of the normal DHCP range of the router.

 
 
Step 5:
Enter your PPTP connection user name in the Username field and enter your password in the New Password and Confirm New Password fields.

 
 
Step 6:
Click Add to list.
 
Step 7:
Click Save.
 
Setting up PPTP connection on the Windows computer

 
Step 1:
Go to Network and Sharing Center on your windows computer and click Set up a new connection or network.

 
 
Step 2:
Choose Connect to a workplace.

 
 
Step 3:
Select Use my Internet connection (VPN).
 
 
Step 4:
Under Do you want to set up an Internet connection before continuing?, select I’ll set up an Internet connection later.

 
 
Step 5:
Enter the router’s Internet address and enter a Destination name for the PPTP connection.  Check Allow other people to use this connection box and then click Next.

 
 
Step 6:
Enter the User name and Password for PPTP connection then click Create.

NOTE:  The User name and Password should be identical with the PPTP server on the Linksys Gigabit VPN router.
 
 
A window will appear that the connection is ready to use.  Click Close.

 
 
Step 7:
Go to Network Connections, right-click on MyPPTP Connection icon then click Connect.
 

A dialog window will appear indicating that the VPN connection is being established.
 
 
You should now be connected to the VPN.  
 
QUICK TIP:  To verify connectivity, ping the router’s local IP address and you should receive four replies.
