How to troubleshoot connection problems with a PlayStation®3

Connecting your PlayStation®3 to the wireless network is fast and easy as long as you have all the necessary information.  However, there are instances when you experience intermittent Wi-Fi access.

These are some of the common reasons why the PlayStation®3 cannot connect to the wireless network:

i.    Incorrect security settings
ii.   MAC Filtering is enabled on your Linksys router
iii.  Dropping/Intermittent connection with the wireless router
iv.  Unable to connect to an online game
v.   Interference with the Media Server Connection
vi.  Outdated system software version

Incorrect security settings

If your wireless network is secured, you will need to know your router’s wireless settings in order to connect to it.  These are the important wireless settings you will need:

  • Wireless network name (SSID)
  • Wireless security mode
  • Security key

To learn how to check or change your wireless network’s settings using the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi, click here.  If your router has the Classic web-based setup page, click here.

MAC Filtering is enabled on your Linksys router

MAC Filtering is an added security feature on your Linksys router that can either prevent or allow specific MAC addresses to be connected to your wireless network.  If this feature is enabled, you will need to add your device’s MAC address in the MAC Filtering tab of your Linksys router.  For details on how to do this, click here. Dropping/Intermittent connection with the wireless router

Try moving your device closer to your wireless router to enhance the wireless signal.  There could be some interference or obstacles between your device and your router.  Large metal object or walls can interfere with the signal including other devices like microwave ovens, 2.4 GHz cordless phones, Bluetooth® devices, high-powered audio equipment and many more.

Unable to connect to an online game

There are some PS3™ systems that have difficulties in connecting to online games or connecting to other players.  This would most likely be because you need to open ports on your Linksys router.  For step-by-step instructions on how to open ports on your Linksys router, click here.  If you're using the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account, click here.

Interference with the Media Server Connection

Media Server Connection is a feature that allows the PlayStation®3 to connect to DLNA Media Servers connected on the same network.  However, if this setting is enabled, this may interfere with the Internet Connectivity of your device.  You may need to disable this feature if it is causing your PlayStation®3 to drop the connection.

To disable the Media Server Connection on your PlayStation®3, go to Settings > Network Settings > Media Server Connection.  Select Disable and press the X button.

Outdated system software version

Your PlayStation®3 performs better if it has the latest system software installed.  You can visit your device’s system Software Update for information on the most recent version.

To check what version is installed on your device, go to Settings > System Settings and select System Information.  You will see the System Software version number from there.

Expanding your network

You can also extend the range of your network, especially in situations that require you to do so.  This is through the use of other networking devices from Linksys like Powerline adapters.  You can read more about Powerline networking by clicking the link below:
