Using the Linksys PLW400 Powerline AV Wireless Network Extender configuration utility

The Powerline AV Utility is used to set up security for the powerline extender and upgrade its firmware.  This article will guide you on how to use the Linksys PLW400 Powerline AV Wireless Network Extender’s configuration utility.

NOTE:  This article assumes that you've already installed the Linksys PLW400.  If not, click here to find out how.  To know more about the features of the Linksys PLW400, click hereAlso, make sure the configuration utility is already installed in your computer.  To learn how to install the utility, click here.

Step 1:
Launch the Powerline AV Utility.  Select your computer’s operating system below for specific instructions:

Windows® 7 / Vista®
Mac® OS X®

QUICK TIP:  In order to manage the Linksys PLW400 via the Powerline AV Utility, you must connect the computer directly to the Ethernet port on the Linksys PLW400 using an Ethernet cable for the utility to detect it.  However, if you only need to change the wireless settings, you can directly access the web-based setup page of the Linksys PLW400 without plugging the computer to it.  Just make sure that they are both part of the network.

NOTE:  If you experience any compatibility issue with Windows 7, click here for troubleshooting steps.  For Windows® 8, click here instead.

Windows® 7 / Vista®

Step 1:
Click Start > All Programs.

 


Step 2:
Click Powerline AV Utility.

 


Step 3:
Click Powerline AV Utility.

NOTE:  You will be prompted for a password if you use a computer that is not connected to the Linksys PLW400.  The device password is printed at the back of the Linksys PLW400.  Make sure to enter it correctly since it is case-sensitive.

Mac® OS X®

Step 1:
Click Go > Applications.

Step 2:
Click Powerline AV Utility.

NOTE:  You will be prompted for a password if you use a computer that is not connected to the Linksys PLW400.  The device password is printed at the back of the Linksys PLW400.  Make sure to enter it correctly since it is case-sensitive.

Step 2:
Once the Powerline AV Utility window opens, click on the links below to learn more about the Utility’s features:

i.    Network Status
ii.   Security
iii.  Quality of Service
iv.  Administrator
v.   Wireless Setting

Network Status

The Network Status tab displays the details of the Powerline adapters that are connected to your network.

NOTE:  To know how to change the device name of your powerline fast Ethernet adapter, click hereTo learn how to change the device password, click here.

NOTE:  If a connected adapter is not listed, click Refresh.  To change information for any adapter that’s listed, select the adapter, then click Edit.

Security

The Security tab allows you to manually change the network key for each device.  To learn how to set up security on Powerline adapters, click here.

NOTE:  If you need to revert to the default key, click Restore Default Key.

Quality of Service

The Quality of Service tab specifies how the network prioritizes network bandwidth.

Administrator

The Administrator tab allows you to restart an adapter, restore factory defaults, or upgrade the adapter’s firmware.  To learn how to upgrade the firmware of the powerline fast ethernet adapter, click hereTo learn how to reset it, click here.
 


 

Wireless Setting

The Wireless Setting tab allows you to change the wireless network name (SSID), wireless security type, or passkey.

  • Make sure all adapters on the powerline network have been configured with the same network password. 
  •  The network password must be identical in order for them to communicate with each other.  You may need to configure your network adapter with advanced security.  To learn how to do this, click here.
