Resolving issues encountered on the PLW400

This article lists the most common issues you will most likely encounter on the Linksys PLW400 Powerline AV Wireless Network Extender and useful steps on how you can resolve them.

You can find below the common issues encountered on your powerline extender:

Your wireless network device is not recognized by your network

  • Make sure that the wireless device is powered ON and that its wireless capability is enabled.
  • If possible, position the PLW400 near the wireless device that you want to connect.  Avoid obstructions (such as metal file cabinets, mirrors, and thick walls) between the PLW400 and any wireless device you want to connect.

If you have set up advanced security for the powerline network, check the following:

  • Make sure all adapters on the powerline network have been configured with the same network password.
  • The network password must be identical in order for them to communicate with each other.  You may need to configure your network adapter with advanced security.  To do this, click here.  Or you may check the PLW400 configuration utility.  For more information on how to do this, click here.

The Ethernet LED does not light up after you connected a wired Ethernet device to the powerline adapter

Follow the steps below to resolve this:

Step 1:
Ensure that the Ethernet cable is securely connected to the adapter.

Step 2:
Ensure that the Ethernet cable is securely connected to the network device you are connecting.

If you're still having problems, follow the steps below:

Step 1:
Disconnect the adapter from the power outlet.

Step 2:
Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the adapter.

Step 3:
Wait for five (5) seconds.

Step 4:
Re-connect the Ethernet cable to the adapter.

Step 5:
Re-connect the adapter to the power outlet.

NOTE:  If this solution doesn’t work, make sure that the electrical outlet is working properly.  Plug a different device into the outlet, and try to switch it ON.

You cannot connect to other computers on your local network or to the Internet

If you did not set up advanced security for the powerline network, follow these instructions:

Step 1:
Locate the powerline adapter that is connected to the computer which is having problems connecting.

Step 2:
Use a pointed object to press and hold the Reset button located on the left side of the adapter for at least ten seconds.  This resets the adapter to its factory default settings.  For detailed instructions on how to reset the PLW400, click here.

If you have set up advanced security for the powerline network, check the following:

  • Make sure all adapters on the powerline network have been configured with the same network password.
  • The network password must be identical in order for them to communicate with each other.  You may need to configure your network adapter with advanced security.  For instructions, click here.  Or you may check the PLW400 configuration utility, for more information on how to do this, click here.
  • If you are adding a new adapter to a pre-existing powerline network with a unique network password, for more information on how to do this, click here.

The PLW400 doesn’t have a default password

The device password is printed at the back of the PLW400.  You must setup a secure wireless network to avoid anyone from connecting to your powerline network and see other connected devices and shared folders.

Cannot see the wireless settings of the PLW400 under the Wireless Settings tab of the utility and the firmware cannot be read on the Network Status tab

You may encounter this scenario when running the Powerline AV Utility, while connected to the wireless network name (SSID) of the PLW400 or to the SSID of the network.  To resolve this, try the following:

Step 1:
Access the PLW400 web-based setup page.  For detailed instructions on how to do this, click here.

NOTE:  The default IP address of the PLW400 is 192.168.1.104.  This can be found on the Wireless Setting tab of the product utility under Advanced Wireless.

Step 2:
Connect your computer to the PLW400 or to the router using an Ethernet cable and run the product utility again.

Encountering the “Cannot find an IP” error message

This may occur when running the Powerline AV Utility, upon clicking on the Wireless Setting tab where a scan for the PLW400 settings takes place.  You can resolve this by connecting your computer with an Ethernet cable into the PLW400 device.

The product utility cannot detect the firmware version correctly

This may occur when running the Powerline AV Utility and you select the Network Status tab.  To resolve this, try the following:

  • You can connect an Ethernet cable into the PLW400 device or router from your computer and run the Powerline AV Utility again.
  • You can access the PLW400 web-based setup page and check the firmware version under Status > Access Point.  To learn how to access the PLW400 web-based setup page, click here.

QUICK TIP:  The Powerline AV Utility with the wireless feature is only downloadable on the website.  It will not install over the existing utility for the Linksys PLE400 and PLS400.  You will need to uninstall the existing utility to install the utility for the wireless powerline.  The wireless utility will be included with each PLW400 box and kit on a CD format.  The utility cannot manage older powerline devices like the Linksys PLE200, PLE300 and PLTE200 as they have a different chipset.
