Overview of the 802.11r feature on the Linksys RE7000 Max-Stream™ AC1900+ Wi-Fi Range Extender

What is 802.11r?

802.11r is a proprietary implementation of IEEE 802.11r-2008 (Fast BSS Transition) on the Linksys RE7000 Max-Stream™ AC1900+ Wi-Fi Range Extender to support Seamless Roaming.

NOTE:  The 802.11r is supported only on Linksys RE7000 v1 and not on Linksys RE7000 v2.

When an 802.11r-compliant device such as iPhone® roams from one Linksys RE7000 to another Linksys RE7000, the fast transition mechanism can reduce the authentication time needed for a full WPA/WPA2 Personal 4-way handshake to be under 100 ms.

NOTE:  Seamless Roaming allows your supported device such as an iPad® or iPhone® to roam between a supported Linksys Max-Stream router or range extender products (make sure that the latest firmware is installed with Seamless Roaming support).  Seamless Roaming guarantees no dropped Voice over IP (VoIP) calls, no lag streaming video/video calls such as FaceTime® or Skype™.

When would I need to enable 802.11r?

You can enable this feature if there are two Linksys RE7000s in the network and one is set up as an Access Point and the other as a Range Extender.  This is to support Fast BSS Transition for roaming from one Linksys RE7000 to another Linksys RE7000 with an 802.11r compliant station device, such as iPhone and iPad that support Wi-Fi Roaming.

How do I configure 802.11r?

This feature is available on the Linksys RE7000 and it is disabled by default.  You will need to log in and enable this option in the Basic Settings page.

The following guidelines apply when using 802.11r:

  • You must have another Linksys RE7000 (one would be configured as an Access Point and another as a Range Extender).
NOTE:  The third-party extenders are not supported with this feature.

  • The Linksys RE7000 extenders must be in the same IP subnet.
  • The wireless settings must be the same:
  • You must use the same WiFi names (SSID) between devices.
  • Supported Security Mode is WPA2 Personal or WPA2/WPA Mixed Mode.
  • The client device must also support Seamless Roaming.  For iPhone, iPad and Android™ devices the option is called WiFi Roaming.  Verify with your device's manufacturer to make sure that this option is enabled.  Setting should be WiFi to WiFi only and not 4G to WiFi when using a mobile device.
