Setting up the Linksys RE6500 AC1200 Dual-Band Wireless Range Extender

There are two ways to set up your Linksys RE6500 – using the embedded Setup Wizard (browser-based setup) or using the Wi-Fi Protected Setup™ (WPS) button of your router or access point supports WPS.  The steps below will guide you on how to set up your Linksys RE6500 using the embedded Setup Wizard.  If you want to use WPS, click here

Before setting up the Linksys RE6500, you need the following information from your existing Wi-Fi.  To know how to check the Wi-Fi settings of your network, click here.
  • Wi-Fi name
  • Password or security key (case sensitive)
NOTE:  The images below may vary depending on the firmware version of your device.  To know more about updating the firmware of your range extender, click here.

Step 1:
Connect the antennas to the device and the power adapter to a power outlet.  Antennas should be positioned upright for best results.

NOTE:  Your antennas might look different from the images below.  If you have the high gain (HG) antennas, you can use them on your Linksys RE6500.

Step 3:
Wait for a solid light on the top panel of the range extender.  It could take up to minutes.

Step 4:
Connect your device to the range extender.
  • Wireless setup – Using a computer or mobile device, connect to the range extender’s default Wi-Fi name, Linksys Extender Setup – xxx, where xxx are the last three characters of the range extender’s MAC address.  You should be connected to this to start the setup of your range extender.
NOTE:  If you can't see your Linksys RE6500 from the list of available networks, you may have to get closer to the range extender.  If the network is still not detected, reset your range extender by pushing the Reset button of your range extender for 5 seconds or until the light starts blinking.  Wait for the light to go solid.
  • Wired setup – Connect your Linksys RE6500 to your computer using an ethernet cable.  Make sure your computer is NOT connected to a Wi-Fi.

Step 5:
On your computer, smartphone or tablet, launch a browser and enter “http://extender.linksys.com” or “192.168.1.1” in the Address bar then hit [Enter].  If the IP address does not work, you will need to look up the IP address in your router’s DHCP table.  To know how to do this, click here.

QUICK TIP:  An unconfigured Linksys RE6500’s IP address is 192.168.1.1.  However, once it is connected to a DHCP server such as a router, it will obtain a different IP address from the router.

Step 6:
Click on Start.
