FILE SHARING IN WINDOWS 10

1.  How do I share files or folders over the network?

To share a file or folder in File Explorer, do one of the following:

Step 1:
Right-click or press a file, select Give access to > Specific people.

Step 2:
Select a file, select the Share tab at the top of File Explorer, and then in the Share with section select Specific people.
 
NOTE:  If you select multiple files at once, you can share them all in the same way.  It works for folders, to share a folder, and all files in it will be shared.

2.  How do I stop sharing files or folders?

To stop sharing in File Explorer, do one of the following:

Step 1: 
Right-click or press a file or folder, then select Give access to > Remove access.

Step 2: 
Select a file or folder, select the Share tab at the top of File Explorer, and then in the Share with section select Remove access.

3.  How do I turn ON network discovery?

To turn ON network discovery, open File Explorer, go to Network, and you will see an error message Network discovery is turned off.  You'll need to turn ON network discovery to see devices on the network that are sharing files.  To turn it ON, select the Network discovery is turned off banner, then select Turn on Network discovery and file sharing.

4.  How do I troubleshoot issues in sharing files and folders?

To share files and folders, make sure to follow these steps: 

Step 1:
Make sure both computers are on the same network.

Step 2: 
If you're on a Public Wi-Fi, set it to Private.  To find out how, click here.

Step 3: 
Turn ON network discovery and file and printer sharing, then turn OFF password protected sharing.
  • Select the Start button, then select Settings > Network & Internet, and on the right side, select Sharing options.
  • Under Private, select Turn on Network discovery and Turn on file and printer sharing.
  • Under All Networks, select Turn off password protected sharing.
Step 4:
Make sharing services start automatically.
  • On the keyboard press the Windows logo key + R.
  • In the Run dialog box, type services.msc, and then select OK.
  • Right-click each of the following services, select Properties.  If they're not running, select Start, and next to Startup type, select Automatic for the following:
  • Function Discovery Provider Host
  • Function Discovery Resource Publication
  • SSDP Discovery
  • UPnP Device Host

5.  How do I set a network to public or private when you first connect?

6.  How do I change Wi-Fi into public or private?

On the right side of the taskbar, select the Wi-Fi icon, under the name of the Wi-Fi that you’re connected to, select Properties, then under Network profile, select Public or Private.

1.  How do I share the printer on the primary PC?

3.  How do I connect a shared printer using Settings?

To connect into a shared printer through settings, make sure to do the following:
  • Select the Start button, then select Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
  • Under Add printers & scanners, select Add a printer or scanner.
  • Choose the printer you want, and then select Add Device.
  • If you don’t see the printer you want, select The printer that I want isn’t listed.
  • In the Add printer dialog box, select Select a shared printer by name, and then enter the computer or device name of the primary PC.
NOTE:  The share name of the printer is using one of these formats:
  • \\computername\printername
  • http://computername/printername/.printer
  • When prompted to install the printer driver, select Next to complete the installation.

4.  How do I find my computer name in Settings?

In the search box on the taskbar, type the computer name, then select View your PC name.  Under Device name, you’ll see the computer name.

5.  How do I find my computer name in Control Panel?

You must do the following steps: 
  • In the search box on the taskbar, type control panel and then select Control Panel.  
  • Select System and Security > System > See the name of this computer.
  • Under Computer name, you’ll see your PC (computer) name.

1.  What do I do before I begin setting up VPN?

Consult your office IT to find out what port/s you need to trigger for your VPN application as they differ depending on the application being used.

3.  What should I do if I cannot access my external resources while connected to the VPN?

Contact your peers that are also working from home.  Check if they can access it from their end.  If they have the same problem as yours, then it is an IT problem and both of you need to contact your IT personnel for assistance.

4.  What do I do if my colleague can access a VPN but I can't?

Try doing the steps below: 
  • Disable your firewalls
  • Change your router’s IP address
NOTE:  Your home network must be completely on a different IP segment from the office network to avoid any IP conflict within the VPN tunnel.
  • Make sure that your VPN software is running on Administrator mode
  • Contact your IT Administrator
