Manually updating the firmware of the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Modem Router, XAC1900

Benefits of keeping the firmware updated


Updating the firmware of your router enables you to fully enjoy the complete features of your Linksys router.  It is especially important to update the firmware when installing your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Modem Router, XAC1900 for the first time to prevent a notification from prompting when you access some of the router and network settings.


IMPORTANT:  Make sure that all devices (e.g. printer, hard drive, USB storage) are disconnected before starting the update process.

There are two steps you need to perform to complete the manual update of the router’s firmware:

 

i. Download the latest available firmware
ii.Upload the latest firmware via the local router interface

Download the latest available firmware

          Step 1:

Visit the Linksys Support SiteEnter the model number of your product in the Search field and click the model number of the device you need help with from the drop-down list.  The product page of your device will then appear.

QUICK TIP:  If you don’t know the model number and the hardware version of your device, click the How do I find my model number? link.

Step 2:
Under the DOWNLOADS section, click Download Software.

Step 3:
Click the hardware version of your device.

Step 4:
Select the firmware for your device and click Download.

Step 5:
Save the firmware on your Desktop and click Save again.

Wait until your download is complete.  Once finished, the firmware should be on the Desktop of your computer. 
 

NOTE:  If you happen to download a zip file, right-click on it first and select Extract All… to unzip.  A zip file means that the actual firmware file to be uploaded is contained within it.  Extracting the zip file will reveal the firmware for your router.

 

You will need to access your router settings to finish the update process.  To do this, follow the steps below.


Upload the latest firmware via the local router interface

Step 1: 
Launch a web browser and access the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account by entering 192.168.1.1 or myrouter.local in the Address bar then press [Enter].  When the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account login page appears, enter “admin” as the default router password then click Sign In.

Step 2: 
Under Router Settings, click Connectivity.

Step 3: 
You will then see two options for updating the firmware of your XAC1900.  Under the Router Firmware Update section, click Choose File.

Step 4: 
Select the latest firmware that is saved on your Desktop and click Open.

Step 5: 
Click Start.

Step 6: 
On the Update firmware pop-up box, click Yes.

Your router will start updating the firmware.
 

NOTE:  During this process, it is important that you do not power OFF the router or close the browser window to avoid corrupting your router.

 

Step 7: 
Router Reboot screen will pop up.  Click Ok to continue.

NOTE:  The router reboot process usually takes a few minutes.

 

Step 8: 
Once the firmware update is successfully completed, click Ok on the Firmware update complete screen.

You should have successfully updated the firmware of the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Modem Router, XAC1900 manually.

 

If you experience failure when updating the firmware, try to powercycle your Power Modem, router, and computer before running the update again.  If this doesn't work still, you can repeat the same process on another computer to further isolate the issue.  If the issue persists, reset the router to factory defaults and run the update again.
