Share your network printer in Windows 10

In Windows® 10, your printer can be shared with other computers on your network.  To share the printer of the primary computer (where the printer is connected to) with secondary computers, set up the sharing settings of the printer.  Follow the steps below to know how.

Before you begin
  • Plug and turn ON your computer and printer
  • Connect the computer to your network
  • Connect the printer to the primary computer (either wirelessly or by using a USB cable)

NOTE:  When sharing a printer, make sure that the sharing settings are set up on the primary and secondary computers.  Also, make sure you know the name of the primary computer.

Follow the instructions below to know how to share the printer on the primary computer using Settings or Control Panel.

 
Share your printer using Settings
 
Step 1:
On your Windows computer, right-click on the Start button.
 
Step 2:
Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
 
Step 3:
Choose the printer you want to share, then select Manage.
 
Step 4:
Select Printer properties, then go to the Sharing tab.
 
Step 5:
On the Sharing tab, select Share this printer.

NOTE:  You may edit the Share name of the printer and then use this name to connect to the printer from a secondary computer.
 
Share your printer using the Control Panel
 
Step 1:
In the search box on the taskbar, type “control panel”.  On the search results, click Control Panel.
 
Step 2:
Under Hardware and Sound, select View devices and printers.

Step 3:
Select and right-click on the printer you want to share.  Select Printer properties, and then go to the Sharing tab.

Step 4:
On the Sharing tab, select Share this printer.

NOTE:  You may edit the Share name of the printer and then use this name to connect to the printer from a secondary computer.
 
Connect the shared printer to another computer

Follow the instructions below to know how to share the printer to another computer using Settings or Control Panel.

 
Connect a shared printer using Settings
 
Step 1:
Click the Start button, then go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
 
Step 2:
Under Add printers & scanners, select Add a printer or scanner.

Step 3:
Choose your shared printer and click Add Device.

 
IMPORTANT:  If the printer you want to share is not on the list, select The printer that I want isn’t listed.  Then, in the Add printer dialog box, select Select a shared printer by name.  Enter the name of the computer or device name of the primary computer and the share name of the printer using any of the formats below:
  • \\computername\printername
  • http://computername/printers/printername/.printer

Step 4:
When the prompt to install the printer driver appears, select Next to complete the installation.
 
Connect a shared printer using Control Panel
 
Step 1:
In the search box on the taskbar, type “control panel”.  On the search results, click Control Panel.
 
Step 2:
Under Hardware and Sound, select View devices and printers > Add a printer.


Step 3:
Choose your shared printer and click Next.

 
IMPORTANT:  If the printer you want to share is not on the list, select The printer that I want isn’t listed.  Then, in the Add printer dialog box, select Select a shared printer by name.  Enter the name of the computer or device name of the primary computer and the share name of the printer using any of the formats below:
  • \\computername\printername
  • http://computername/printers/printername/.printer
Step 4:

Find the name of your computer

Follow the steps below to find the computer name or device name of your computer.

Find the name of your computer in Settings
 
Step 1:
In the search box on the taskbar, type “computer name”.
 
Step 2:
Select View your PC name.  The computer name is found next to the Device name.

 
Find the name of your computer in Control Panel
 
Step 1:
In the search box on the taskbar, type “control panel”.  On the search results, click Control Panel.
 
Step 2:
Go to System and Security.

Step 3:
In the System option, click on See the name of this computer.  The computer name is found next to the Computer name.
