Configuring the Wireless Bridge Mode on most Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Routers

Some Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Routers support Wireless Bridge Mode. To check if your router has this option, log in to the router's web-based setup page and click on Connectivity > Internet Settings.

Wireless Bridge Mode uses one of the wireless network bands to connect to your upstream router. This article will give you instructions on how to configure your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router as a Wireless Bridge.

IMPORTANT: Make sure that your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router is updated with the latest Firmware Version before proceeding. For instructions on how to update the firmware of your router, click
here.

Tips:
  • Determine which frequency (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) you are going to use to bridge the router.
  • Only one frequency can be used for Wireless Bridging.
  • Only the frequency not used for Wireless Bridging can be broadcasted for other clients to connect.
  • When a Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router has been converted into a Wireless Bridge, you can no longer access the router remotely using the Linksys app. You will need to be connected locally in order to access the router.
  • If you have a dual-band router:
    • Decide which frequency you are going to use to bridge the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router. Keep in mind the distance and the clients that will connect to the frequency of the router in Wireless Bridge Mode.
    • If the 5 GHz band will be used for bridging, then the 2.4 GHz band on the router becomes the available frequency for Wi-Fi clients.
    • If the 2.4 GHz band will be used for bridging, then the 5 GHz band on the router becomes the available frequency band for Wi-Fi clients.
  • If you have a single-band router:
    • Configure Wireless Bridging on the 2.4 GHz band of the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router.
    • Since the 2.4 GHz frequency band was used for bridging, only clients connecting through Local Area Network (LAN) can connect to the router via Wireless Bridge Mode.
  • Do not use the WAN port.
  • Log in to the web-based setup page in Wireless Bridge Mode via the IP address only.
  • Supported encryption methods are WPA™ Personal, WPA2™ Personal, and WPA Mixed Personal.
  • In Wireless Bridge Mode, the selected frequency you choose in the Connectivity tool will not be available in the Wireless tool to configure. To make changes to the selected frequency that is being used in Wireless Bridge Mode, go to the Connectivity > Internet Settings tab.
IMPORTANT: Obtain the wireless settings of the main router first before proceeding.

Step 1:
Enter “http://192.168.1.1” in your web browser’s Address bar and log in to the router’s web-based setup page.

NOTE: If your router has NOT been configured, you will be prompted to set it up. On the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Setup page, make sure to tick the two checkboxes and click Next to bypass Smart Setup. After this step, you need to log in via the local access link and enter the default password "admin".

Step 7:
Click to save settings. Click Yes to continue.

Once the router is in Wireless Bridge Mode, it will become a DHCP client so you will need to find the new IP address in the DHCP table of the main router. You will have to use this new IP address to log in to the router’s web-based setup page if you need to configure it later on.

NOTE: If the router in Wireless Bridge cannot find the main router, you will receive an error message. Clicking Ok will take you back to the Internet Settings tab where you left off so you can double check the wireless settings.

When the router is in Wireless Bridge Mode, only the supported tools in Bridge Mode will display. Connectivity, Troubleshooting and Wireless are the only tools supported.

  • Connectivity – This tool allows you to do the following:
  • Edit the Wireless Bridge settings on the Internet Settings tab
  • Change the wireless settings of the broadcasting radio that is not being used as a Wireless Bridge (for your clients)
  • Upgrade the firmware
  • Change the admin password
  • Select Time Zone settings
  • Change the internet connection type (e.g. change the Wireless Bridge back to DHCP or any other supported internet connection type)

The bottom section is for the 5 GHz wireless clients. You can customize the Wi-Fi name and password on this band.

NOTE: In this example, only clients that support 5 GHz radio band will be able to connect to the Wireless Bridge.
