No Wireless Connection with WMP11 on Windows XP

This can be caused by several circumstances, please see which scenario best fits your situation. Be sure to have the latest driver installed for your card, which can be downloaded from http://support.linksys.com.

Have signal but can’t get online

If you have signal strength but no connection please follow these steps:

1.      Click on the Start button and click on the Run option.

2.      When the “Run” window opens, type in ncpa.cpl into the “Open” field and hit “OK”.

3.      When the “Network Connections” window opens, double click on your Wireless Network
         Connection
 icon.

4.      When the “Wireless Network Connection Status” window opens, click on the
         Properties button.

  • If the “Wireless Network Connection” window opens, and not the “Wireless Network Connection Status” window please see the “No signal strength” scenario.

5.      After the “Wireless Network Connection Properties” window opens, click on the Wireless
         Networks
 tab.

6.      When the “Wireless Networks” area appears go to the “Preferred networks” pane, click on 
         your SSID, and click the Properties button.

  • The default SSID for all Linksys Wireless Access Points and Wireless Routers is linksys.

7.       When the “SSID Properties” window opens, uncheck the This key is provided for me
          automatically
 box.

          a.   A network not using WEP

                 i.   If your network is not using WEP, then uncheck the Data Encryption 
                      WEP
 option or change the “Data encryption” option to Disabled.

          b.   A network using WEP

                 i.   Please see our article on configuring WEP with a WMP11 in Windows XP,
                      Answer ID 584.

8.      Click the OK button on the “SSID Properties” window, and then click the OK button on the
         “Wireless Network Connection Properties” window.

9.      Reboot your computer

  • If you are still unable to get online, please see the Answer ID 791.

No signal strength

If you do not have signal strength please use the following instructions:

1.      Click on the Start button and click on the Run option.

2.      When the “Run” window opens, type in ncpa.cpl into the “Open” field and click “OK”.

3.      When the “Network Connections” window opens, double click on your Wireless Network Connection icon.

4.      When the “Wireless Network Connection” window opens, you will see one of the following:

         a.   The SSID of your Wireless Access Point or Wireless Router

                 i.   If you see the SSID of your Wireless Access Point or Wireless Router, then click
                      on the SSID and either check the box for Allow me to connect to the selected
                      network, even though it is not secure
, or input your Wireless Networks WEP
                      Key
into the “Network Key” and “Confirm Network Key” fields.

           b.   Nothing shows up

                 i.   If nothing shows up please try power cycling your Wireless Access Point or
                      Wireless Router.

                 ii.   If power cycling does not help, try changing the channel on your Wireless
                       Access Point or Wireless Router.  You can find information on changing the
                       channel on your Wireless Access Point or Wireless Router’s documentation.

1.       Shut down your computer, place the WMP11 in a different PCI slot, start up the computer,
          and try again.
