How to start and manage a Cluster using the Linksys LAPAC1750PRO

Clustering provides a single point of administration for other access points in cluster mode.  When any change is made on any access point, it is pushed out to the other access points in the cluster.  This feature reduces the costs and complexity of managing multiple wireless access points.

When clustering access points:
  • Clusters can contain a mixture of access points with two radios and access points with a single radio.  When the configuration of a single-radio access point in the cluster changes, the access point propagates the change to the first radio of all cluster members.  The configuration of the second radio on any dual-radio access points in the cluster is not affected.
  • If a cluster contains only single-radio access points and a dual radio access point joins the cluster, then only Radio 1 on the dual-radio access point is configured with the cluster configuration.  Radio 2 on the access point remains as it was prior to joining the cluster.  However, if the cluster already has at least one dual-radio access point, then the second radio of the access point joining the cluster is configured with the cluster settings.
  • A Cloud access point like the Linksys LAPAC2600C cannot be clustered with a Non-Cloud access point such as the Linksys LAPAC2600 and vice versa.

Here are the guidelines in clustering your Linksys LAPAC1750PRO Business AC1750 Pro Dual-Band Access Point:
  • This feature can only be used with another Linksys LAPAC1750PRO.
  • The access points must use the same radio mode (for example, Radio 1 uses IEEE 802.11g).
  • The access points are connected on the same bridged segment.
  • Access points in cluster mode must be wired to the network.
  • Cluster name must be the same on all access points joining a cluster.
  • Clustering mode must be enabled on all access points.
  • Clustering is NOT supported in WDS mode or Workgroup bridge mode.
  • Each cluster can have up to 10 members.
  • IPv4/IPv6 is supported.
  • Only one cluster per Wi-Fi is supported.  However, a network subnet can have multiple clusters.

To start a Cluster, proceed on the following steps:

Step 1:
Access the web interface of your Linksys LAPAC1750PRO #A.  For instructions, click here.

Step 2:
Click on the Configuration > Cluster > Access Points sub-tab.

In this page, you can do the following:
  • Start or stop clustering on an access point
  • View the cluster members
  • Configure the location and cluster name for a cluster member
NOTE:  These settings are NOT shared; you need to access each access point to change the Location and/or Cluster Name.  If you change the Cluster Name of an access point that is already part of a Cluster, this will remove the access point from its current Cluster.
  • Once the access points are in the same Cluster, they will display in this page and you can use the embedded link from here to navigate to the user interface of the selected access point.
NOTE:  The link currently works if the HTTP/HTTPS port is 80.  If you change the HTTP/HTTPS port, you will need to launch a browser and enter "http://x.x.x.x:xx" (where x.x.x.x is the access point's IP address and xx is the port number) in the Address bar.
  • Edit the Clustering Options information when clustering is disabled.
NOTE:  If you see the Start Clustering button, this means that Clustering mode is not enabled.

Step 3:
Enter a Location (this can be different on all access points) to help the admin determine the location of the access point.  Enter a Cluster Name and click Save.

IMPORTANT:  The Cluster Name must be the same name on all access points that will be part of the cluster.

Step 4:
Click Start Clustering.  You will receive the following message.

Wait until you see the message Clustering is online before you proceed to configure the next access point.

Step 5:
Connect your Linksys LAPAC1750PRO #B to the network using an ethernet cable.  You don’t have to configure any settings unless you want a specific IP address.

Step 6:
Enter the same Cluster Name.  Location is optional.

Step 7:
Click Start Clustering on your Linksys LAPAC1750PRO #B and wait until Clustering is working.

Step 8:
Access the web interface of your Linksys LAPAC1750PRO #A and refresh the page until you see the new access point that was added to the cluster.

NOTE:  You can also see the total number of access points that have joined the cluster.  You just have to click Refresh to update the page.

QUICK TIP:  To view the web interface of a specific access point, just click on the IP address of the access point or launch a browser and enter the IP address (link only works on Port 80).  If the access point is using a different port number, you must access it by entering the IP address and new port number in another browser tab.  Once an access point joins the cluster, settings from your Linksys LAPAC1750PRO #A will be pushed to your Linksys LAPAC1750PRO #B.  For a complete list of settings that are shared throughout a cluster on the Linksys LAPAC1750PRO, click here.

You should be able to manage your clustered Linksys LAPAC1750PRO through the following pages:

Sessions
Channel Management
Wireless Neighborhood

Sessions
  • This page displays clients associated to the access point in cluster mode.
  • You can access this page by going to Configuration > Cluster > Sessions.
Channel Management

User-added image
  • This page displays the access points that are in cluster mode with their Band, Channel and Status.
  • You can access this page by going to Configuration > Cluster > Channel Management.
  • You can click Start to enable Channel Management which will automatically re-assign channels.
  • You can select a checkbox under the Locked column to lock a channel to a specific Radio.
  • You can click Refresh to re-assign channels.

  • This page shows the access points that are in range of any access point in the cluster.
  • You can access this page by going to Configuration > Cluster > Wireless Neighborhood.
  • Cluster members are on the top list and non-cluster members are on the bottom.
  • It also displays MAC addresses and Location Name.
  • You can view neighbor details of a cluster member by clicking on the IP address.
  • You can choose to display In cluster, Not in cluster, or Both.

The Neighbor Details page of a cluster member provides more detail on the access points.
