Connecting a Linksys switch to a router

Using a switch is an easy way to build a fast, reliable ethernet network.

This article will guide you on how to connect the switch to a router. It assumes that you already have a router set up. To learn how to set up your router, click here.

IMPORTANT: Newer models of Linksys switches (such as the SE1500, SE2500, and SE2800 models) do not have Uplink ports. Instead, they have auto-sensing ports that are capable of detecting either straight-through or crossover cables.

Step 1:
Make sure all of the devices you will connect to the switch are powered OFF.

Step 2:
Connect an Ethernet cable to one of the numbered ports on the switch, then connect the other end to a wired device such as a computer, a gaming console or to another switch.

NOTE: Repeat Step 2 to connect additional devices. In this example, we will be connecting devices from Ports 1 to 4.

Step 3:
Connect an ethernet cable to one of the ports at the back of the switch, then connect the other end to one of the ethernet ports at the back of the router.

NOTE: In this example, we are using the E4200 router and the SE1500 switch.

Step 4:
Connect the supplied power adapter to the power port on the switch, then connect the other end into an electrical outlet.

Step 5:
Power ON the devices connected to the switch.

NOTE: Depending on your type of switch, there is a LED corresponding to each port that will indicate its connectivity status.

You should be able to use your ethernet-enabled devices now.

QUICK TIP: The wired devices connected to the switch will get an IP address from the router or the DHCP server.
