The Linksys LAPN300 Business Access Point Wireless Wi-Fi Single Band 2.4 GHz N300 with PoE is a 2.4 GHz, IEEE802.11n-compliant wireless access point with a Gigabit Power over Ethernet (PoE) and it is backward-compatible with the widely deployed 802.11b/g infrastructure.

2. What is the default username and password to access the web-based setup page of the Linksys LAPN300?

The default username and password is admin.

3. What is the default IP Address of the Linksys LAPN300?

The device acts as DHCP client by default, and will try to get IP Address from a DHCP server. If there is no DHCP server on your network, the device will roll back to its default IP Address of 192.168.1.252.

NOTE: If the device is already connected to a DHCP server such as a router, you can also determine its IP Address by checking the router’s DHCP client table. To learn how, click
here. Another way is to ping it through the command prompt using the command ping LAPXXXX where X is the last five (5) digits of the MAC Address of your device.

The Linksys LAPN300 only comes with a built-in setup wizard found in the Quick Start section of its web-based setup page and not through a setup CD.

6. Is the Linksys LAPN300 dual-band?

No, the Linksys LAPN300 only supports 2.4 GHz frequency.

7. Does the Linksys LAPN300 support Power over Ethernet (PoE)?

Yes, the Linksys LAPN300 supports Power over Ethernet (PoE). It can be powered ON from an 802.3af/802.3at compliant source.

8. How can I reset the Linksys LAPN300 to factory defaults?

To reset your Linksys LAPN300 to factory defaults settings, press and hold the Reset button for more than 15 seconds. Alternatively, you can also reset the Linksys LAPN300 by accessing the web-based setup page and going to Maintenance > Factory Default. Select Yes then click Save.

9. What power adapter does the Linksys LAPN300 use?

LEDs

1. What LEDs does the Linksys LAPN300 have?

The Linksys LAPN300 has only one (1) LED but it lights up in different colors depending on the status of the device:

  • Green - The LED will blink green when system is booting. It turns solid when system is normal and no wireless device is connected.

  • Blue - The LED will blink blue when system upgrade is in process, and turns solid when system is normal with at least one (1) wireless device connected.

  • Red - The LED will be solid red when the booting or update process failed and a hard reset is required.

2. What should I do if the LED is not lit when I am using a PoE switch to it?

If you are using a PoE switch to provide power to the wireless access point but its LED is not lit up, do the following:

  • Make sure that the Ethernet cable connecting the wireless access point and the PoE switch is connected properly at both ends.

  • Make sure that the power cord of the PoE switch is plugged into a working power outlet or power strip.

  • Make sure that the PoE switch is functioning normally.

  • Check PoE switch for power limitations.

WIRELESS SECURITY

1. What type of wireless security does the Linksys LAPN300 use?

The Linksys LAPN300 is compatible with six (6) wireless security types. These are WEP, WPA2â„¢-Personal, WPAâ„¢/WPA2â„¢-Personal, WPA2â„¢-Enterprise, WPAâ„¢/WPA2â„¢-Enterprise and RADIUS.

2. Does it support a RADIUS server?

Yes.

3. What type of WEP format does the Linksys LAPN300 support?

The Linksys LAPN300 only supports WEP with Hexadecimal format security key.

4. How do I enable MAC filtering on the Linksys LAPN300?

In the web-based setup page of the Linksys LAPN300, go to Configuration > Connection control. Select an SSID and select Local. Enter the MAC Address of the device you want to filter, then select either Allow only following MAC addresses to connect to wireless network or Prevent following MAC addresses from connecting to wireless network.

5. How do I associate a VLAN to an SSID?

In the web-based setup page, enable VLAN in LAN > Network Setup then go to Wireless > Basic Settings. Select an SSID and enter a VLAN ID then click Save.

NOTE: When VLAN is enabled, the Workgroup Bridge feature will be disabled.


6. I have Management Access enabled but why is it that wireless clients can still access the web-based setup page?

If the client is connected via an Ethernet cable to the same network or associated to a different AP in the same network, this is expected. This feature works if the wireless client is wirelessly associated to the SSID of the specific AP that has this feature enabled.

7. What does the Bad Format error message mean when I am in the Wireless > Connection Control page?

The Bad Format error occurs when there are no colons in the MAC Address field as you enter them. The correct format needs to be xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx.

SPECIAL FEATURES

1. Can the access point act as my DHCP Server?

No. The access point is similar to a wireless hub and has no DHCP capabilities.

2. Can I run an application from a remote computer over the wireless network?

This depends on whether or not the application is designed to be used over a network. Check the application’s documentation to determine if it supports such operation.

3. Can the access point work with a Intel® Centrino® client?

Yes. However, an Intel® Centrino® client may only support 20 MHz channels so the maximum data rate with this client will be less than 130 Mbps.

4. What are the IEEE 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n standards all about?

These are IEEE standards for wireless networks. These standards allow wireless networking hardware from different manufacturers to communicate, provided that the hardware complies with these standards. The following are the maximum data transfer and operating frequency of these standards:

  • 802.11b - maximum data transfer rate of 11 Mbps and operating frequency of 2.4 GHz

  • 802.11g - maximum data transfer rate of 54 Mbps and operating frequency of 2.4 GHz

  • 802.11n - maximum data transfer rate of 600 Mbps and operating frequency of either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz

The Linksys LAPN300 supports the following IPv6 functions:

7. Would the information be intercepted while transmitting on air?

WLAN features two-fold protection in security. On the hardware side, as with Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum technology, it has the inherent security feature of scrambling. On the software side, the WLAN series offers a variety of wireless security methods to enhance security and access control. Users can set it up depending upon their needs.

8. What is a Media Access Control (MAC) Address?

The Media Access Control (MAC) Address is a unique identifier assigned by the manufacturer to any networking device (such as a network adapter) that allows the network to identify it at the hardware level. For all practical purposes, this number is usually permanent. Unlike an IP Address which can change every time a computer logs on to the network, the MAC Address of a device stays the same, making it a valuable identifier for the network.

9. What is a Rogue AP?

A Rogue AP is an access point that has been installed on a secure network without explicit authorization from a system administrator. Rogue access points pose a security threat because anyone with access to the premises can ignorantly or maliciously install an inexpensive wireless AP device that can potentially allow unauthorized parties to access the network.

10. How does the Rogue AP Detection feature work?

As soon as this feature is enabled in the Linksys LAPN300 and the user accesses the Rogue AP detection in the web-based setup page, site survey will be done at once and the screen will display the results of Rogue AP detection.

11. What is the Workgroup Bridge feature?

The Workgroup Bridge feature enables the AP to extend the accessibility of a remote network. In Workgroup Bridge mode, the AP acts as a wireless station (STA) on the wireless LAN. It can bridge traffic between a remote wired network or associated wireless clients and the wireless LAN that is connected using the Workgroup Bridge mode.

12. How do I avoid interference?

Using multiple access points on the same channel and in close proximity to one another will generate interference. When employing multiple access points, make sure to operate each one on a different channel (frequency).

13. How do I resolve issues with signal loss?

There is no way to know the exact range of your wireless network without testing. Every obstacle placed between an access point and a wireless computer will create signal loss. Leaded glass, metal, concrete floors, water and walls will inhibit the signal and reduce range. Start with your access point and your wireless computer in the same room and move it away in small increments to determine the maximum range in your environment. You may also try using different channels, as this may eliminate interference affecting only one channel. You can also go to the access point’s web-based setup page, click Wireless > Advanced Settings and make sure the output power is set to 100%.

14. Does the access point function as a firewall?

No. The access point is only a bridge from wired Ethernet to wireless clients.

15. I have excellent signal strength, but why can't I see my network?

Wireless security, such as WEP or WPA, is probably enabled on the access point, but not on your wireless adapter (or vice versa). Verify that the same wireless security settings are being used on all devices in your wireless network.

16. Can I configure the Linksys LAPN300 by HTTPS?

Yes.

17. Does the Linksys LAPN300 support NetBIOS Protocol?

Yes.

18. How does it work when the channel is configured to Auto?

The Linksys LAPN300 will check the channel with the lowest amount of wireless interference when the device reboots or when the user changes the parameters of the wireless radio to trigger the radio to restart. The wireless client will connect to this channel with the lowest amount of wireless interference.

19. How many MAC Addresses does the Linksys LAPN300 have?

The Linksys LAPN300 has two (2) legal global MAC Addresses, one is a LAN MAC Address and the other is a Wi-Fi radio interface MAC Address. The multiple SSID and Workgroup Bridge interface MAC Addresses are temporary and are calculated based on Wi-Fi radio interface MAC Address.

20. What version of SNMP does the Linksys LAPN300 support?

The Linksys LAPN300 supports versions 1, 2 and 3.

21. Are there operating system and browser limitations in using the Linksys LAPN300?

There are no operating system limitations. Just make sure that the browser supports JavaScript® such as the following:

  • Internet Explorer® 7.0 or later

  • Chromeâ„¢ 8 or later

  • Firefox® 3.5 or later

  • Safari® 5 or later

22. Why can't I enable HTTP to HTTPS Redirect when I am in the Management Access page?

You should disable HTTP first before you can enable HTTP to HTTPS Redirect.

23. Can users access the web-based setup page and change any of the configurations?

Yes, users can access the web-based setup page but they have read only permissions. Only admin accounts will have read/write permissions.

24. How do I use the Packet Capture feature on the Linksys LAPN300?

This feature will only capture the packets. Upon clicking start, you will be prompted to save the file, however, you will need a third party software to open and analyze the packet such as Wiresharkâ„¢.

25. How do I use the Diagnostic Log?

This is only for engineering use. Should a technician request a log, you can only download and provide the log to the technician.

FIRMWARE UPGRADE

1. How do I upgrade the firmware of the Linksys LAPN300?

Step 1:
Download the Linksys LAPN300's firmware.

Step 2:
Open the access point’s web-based setup page. For instructions, click here.

Step 3:
Click on Maintenance > Firmware Upgrade, then click the Choose File button and select the new firmware file you downloaded.

Step 5:
Click the Upgrade button.

NOTE: Do NOT power OFF or press the Reset button while upgrading the firmware of the access point. The Linksys LAPN300 will reboot automatically after the firmware upgrade is completed.
