Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works for me Easy to set up, it extends coverage to where I needed it… for my 2.4GHz band. I still need to get the 5GHz band set up, but am happy that I at least have one band working so haven’t made it a priority.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nearly everything it needs to be I'm using this as a transparent bridge to connect a WiFi network to wired clients. The initial setup is clearly geared around using it as a WiFi repeater, but after that point all the repeated-WiFi settings can be shut-off and the wired gigabit connect can be used to bridge to the WiFi network. Its internal DHCP server responds on the ethernet LAN whenever the main WiFi network is unavailable, which allows you to get an address to "see" the RE7000 for configurations, which gets in the way sometimes: clients get an address in a private range (with 5 min lease time) before the bridge to the WiFi is up, where they would get addresses in main router's range. Adjustments along that level of detail are not available, which can be a bit frustrating, but overall the simple web interface does everything most people would need it to do, and it gets the job done.

I have a EA9500 router. I want to add 2 RE7000 extenders. Do I need to pull a cat6 cable from the router to each extender? Does each extender need AC power?

Asked by: Hepler
Each extender needs AC power — in fact, the plug is integrated into the unit so it needs to hang on the wall or have adequate space in a power strip. Running Ethernet (Cat 5/5e/6) to the extenders is not required, but can be useful: the extenders can be configured as either wireless range-extenders or as wired access points. As a wireless range-extender, the RE7000 sends data back-and-forth to the main router over WiFi, and as a wired AP it sends that traffic over its wired link. In either case, the RE7000 is the base of its own WiFi network to reach local clients (laptop/etc), and can be given its own network name, if you want to explicitly choose when to connect to the extender, or the same name as your main router's WiFi if you want to easily roam between them to the stronger WiFi signal. Note also that when configured as a wireless range-extender you can plug-into the RE7000's Ethernet port to connect wired devices into the WiFi network. The configuration which works better for you will depend on how easy it is to run Ethernet vs finding a good mid-point where the extender can have a solid WiFi signal to both your router in one direction and your laptop/etc in the other, whether an extra "hop" over WiFi for all your "extended" traffic is acceptable (in terms of added latency & channel use), and if you have a need to connect wired devices near the extender into your WiFi network. These configurations are detailed in the User Guide and video on the support page: https://www.linksys.com/support-product?sku=RE7000

My Velop mesh node is just outside the basement door. There’s no outlet until deeper into the basement. Will the extender work?
