HARDWARE INFORMATION

1.  What are the Linksys LGS308MP and LGS308P?

The Linksys LGS308MP 8-Port Smart Gigabit PoE+ Switch MP (Linksys LGS308MP) and Linksys LGS308P 8-Port Business Smart Gigabit PoE+ Switch (Linksys LGS308P) offer a quick and easy solution to extend your office network.  The smart switch features gigabit speed ports, a web-based setup page for easy configuration and management, and PoE+ support for networking devices to be located anywhere without the need for alternating current (AC) outlets.  To learn more click
here.

2.  Is running a setup CD needed for this device to work?

No.  The switch can be set up through its web-based setup page.  For more information, click here.

3.  Can the switch be rack mounted or wall mounted?

Yes.  It can be rack or wall mounted.  For instructions, click here.

4.  What is its default IP address?

The switch is a DHCP client by default.  If there is no DHCP server on your network, the default IP address of the switch is 192.168.1.251/255.255.255.0.

5.  What is PoE?

Power over Ethernet (PoE) enables an ethernet cable to deliver both data and power.

6.  What kind of devices can I connect to the switch?

You can connect hubs, IP phones, IP cameras, computers, routers, other switches, and network printers to the switch.

7.  What is the advantage of having a switch when it comes to data transfer?

The switch's gigabit speed ports provide high bandwidth capabilities.  It also acts as a repeater which regenerates data signals as they pass through it.  This feature acts as a safeguard to deter data loss and ensure that transmissions arrive securely at their destinations.  It can also filter data based on its source and destination as compared to the repeater which can only regenerate the signal without checking its recipients.

8.  Can I use the switch to share internet connection to all computers in the network?

No.  The switch allows more computers to connect to a local network but is not capable of sharing internet connection across the network.

9.  Does the switch support QoS?

The switch supports Quality of Service (QoS) in Basic Mode only.

10.  Does the switch support port mirroring?

Yes.  The switch supports up to four sources to one target.  To learn more, click here.

11.  What is included in the switch's package?

Package contents
  • Quick start guide
  • Power cord and adapter
  • CD with documentation
  • Rack-mount kit or wall-mount kit
  • Linksys LGS308MP or LGS308P
12.  What is its PoE power budget?

The PoE power budget is 130 W.  If the budget is exceeded, power will be provided based on the priority defined on the port:
  • Critical
  • High
  • Low
PoE power budget light status:
  • OFF - Total power feeding does not reach 85 percent of total power budget
  • Solid orange - Total power feeding is reaching over 85 percent of total power budget
13.  Does it have fan support?

Yes.  The switch has one fan.  Fan failure is indicated by a blinking yellow SYSTEM light.

LIGHTS

1.  What do the lights on the switch mean?

SYSTEM light - Indicates the device’s status and activities.
  • OFF - system is powered off.
  • Solid blue - system is powered on and working.
  • Blinking blue:
    • Booting/System self-test
    • Device is using the factory default IP address of 192.168.1.251
  • Blinking yellow - failure detected (e.g., fan)
PoE MAX - if solid orange; it indicates that the switch is providing more than 85 percent of its total PoE budget.

Port lights (RJ45)

Left - indicates link/activity status
  • OFF - no link detected
  • Solid - link is detected/established
  • Blinking - transmitting/receiving data
Right - indicates PoE status
  • OFF - No powered device (PD) detected
  • ON - Valid 802.3af/at PD is detected
NOTE:  All port light colors are green.  To learn more about the ports and lights on the switch, click here.

2.  Why does the SYSTEM light keep blinking?

It flashes when the device is acquiring an IP address and when currently using the factory default IP address of 192.168.1.251.  The light will change to solid blue when a new unique IP address is received from the DHCP server or a static IP address has been set.

3.  When will the PoE MAX light turn on?

The PoE MAX light turns solid orange when the switch is providing more than 85 percent of its total PoE budget to warn you that only 15 percent of the total PoE budget is available.

TROUBLESHOOTING

1.  How do I upgrade the switch's firmware?

The switch's firmware can be upgraded through HTTP/HTTPs mode or TFTP mode through the web-based setup page.  For instructions, click here.

You can perform the initial troubleshooting steps below to resolve this issue:

Step 1:
Verify if the lights are properly lit on the switch using this guide:
  • SYSTEM - Blue
  • LINK/ACT - Green
  • PoE MAX- Green
Step 2:
Turn OFF the switch and the computers connected to it.
