1. What is the Linksys WRT54GH Compact Wireless Home Router?

The Linksys WRT54GH Compact Wireless Home Router is a Wireless-G Home Router with SpeedBurst.  It is a Wireless Access Point which lets you connect to the network wirelessly and a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together.

It can serve as your network's DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your computers against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN pass-through.  The router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.

2. What IP Address, Username, and Password are used to log in to the Linksys WRT54GH?

The default IP Address is 192.168.1.1.  There is no username and the password is admin.

3. How can I reset the Linksys WRT54GH to factory defaults?

Press and hold the Reset button on the back panel of the Linksys WRT54GH for about five (5) seconds, then release.

Alternatively, you can use the web-based setup page.  Follow the steps below:

Step 1:
On the web interface of the router, click on the Administration tab.

Step 2:
Click on Factory Defaults.

Step 3:
Click the Restore Factory Defaults button.

LEDs

1. What LEDs does the Linksys WRT54GH have?

  • POWER (Green) -  The Power LED lights up on the front panel and stays on while the router is powered ON.  When the router does through its self-diagnostic mode during every boot-up, this LED will flash.  When the diagnostic is complete, the LED will be solidly lit.
  • ETHERNET (1, 2, 3, 4) (Green) -  These numbered LEDs, corresponding with the numbered ports on the router’s back panel, serve two (2) purposes:
           i.  The green LED lights up when the router is connected to a device through the corresponding port at 10/100.
           ii.  If the LED is flashing, then the router is sending or receiving data over that port.
  • INTERNET (Green) -  The Internet LED lights up when there is a connection through the Internet port.
  • WIRELESS (Green) -  The Wireless LED lights up when there is a wireless connection.  If the LED is flashing, the router is sending or receiving data over the wireless network.

2. I can’t see the SSID on my wireless networks.  What should I do?

You should check the following items:

Router power –  Check if the router is powered ON.  Make sure that the power adapter is connected to the router’s power port and into a power outlet.

Broadcast option –  Follow the following steps:

Step 1:
On the web interface of the router, click on Wireless.

Step 2:
Click on Basic Wireless Settings.

Step 3:
Look for SSID Broadcast and make sure it’s enabled.

Wireless adapter –  Check if your wireless adapter supports 802.11g or 802.11b.  Else, you would need to change your wireless adapter to one that can support these protocols.

Yes.  Before you upgrade the firmware, write down all your custom settings.  After upgrading the firmware, you will have to re-enter all of your configuration settings.

13. What Internet browser can the Linksys WRT54GH be used with?

Netscape 4.7 or higher and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher.

14. Is the Linksys WRT54GH SES capable?

No, the router has no hardware or software Secure Easy Setup (SES) push button.

15. What is MAC Address Clone and what is it used for?

Some ISPs will require you to register a MAC Address in order to access the Internet.  If you do not wish to re-register the MAC Address with your ISP, you may assign the MAC Address you have currently registered with your ISP to the Router with the MAC Address Clone feature.

If you want to clone the MAC Address of the computer you are currently using to configure the Router, click the Clone My MAC Address button.  The Router will automatically detect your computer’s MAC Address, so you do NOT have to call your ISP to change the registered MAC Address to the Router’s MAC Address.  It is recommended that the computer registered with the ISP is used to open the MAC Address Clone tab.

16. Can the IP Address number assigned to DHCP server be more than 253?

No, the default number is 50.

17. What is Diagnostics and what is it for?

Diagnostics is used to check the Internet connection and perform ping and traceroute commands.

18. What is Port Forwarding?

The Port Forwarding screen allows you to set up public services on your network such as, web servers, ftp servers, email server, or other specialized Internet applications.

19. Can I select Time Zone and automatically adjust the Clock?

Yes.

20. Which dynamic route protocol is supported on the Linksys WRT54GH?

There is no dynamic route protocol supported by the Linksys WRT54GH.

21. What is Port Triggering?

Port triggering will forward a port based on the incoming port specified.  Check with your software application to find out what is necessary to enter in these fields (you can set 10 rules at most).

22. What is DMZ and what is it used for?

The DMZ screen allows one local user to be exposed to the Internet for use of a special-purpose service such as Internet gaming and videoconferencing.  DMZ hosting forwards all the ports at the same time to one computer.  The Port Range Forwarding is more secure because it only opens the ports you want to have opened, while DMZ hosting opens all the ports of one computer, exposing the computer to the Internet.

23. How many network modes are supported in the Linksys WRT54GH?

The router supports two (2) network modes – 802.11b and 802.11g.

24. What is Wireless MAC Filter and what is it used for?

Wireless MAC Filter is a feature that allows you to filter wireless access on your router by using the MAC Addresses of the wireless devices.

25. What is UPnP?

UPnP is Universal Plug and Play, which allows Windows ME and XP to automatically configure the router for various Internet applications, such as gaming and videoconferencing.
