Upgrading the Linksys range extender's firmware

Firmware updates include bug fixes and functionality enhancements to the range extender. Before proceeding with the firmware upgrade, make sure that you have done the following:

  • Download the latest firmware for your range extender from the Linksys Support Site.
  • Make sure that you download and save the file to the computer which you will use to update the range extender’s firmware.

Do NOT upgrade the firmware of the range extender unless you are experiencing problems when using it or the new firmware has a feature you want to use.

Accessing the range extender’s web interface

To upgrade the range extender’s firmware, follow the steps below:

1. Connect the range extender directly to the computer using an ethernet cable. Make sure that the range extender is not connected to the router when performing the upgrade.

2. Open a web browser and enter the “192.168.1.1” default IP address in the Address bar and press [Enter]. If the range extender is already configured, you may either enter “http://extender.linksys.com” in the Address bar or check the router’s DHCP Client Table and look for the range extender’s IP address.

3. You will be prompted for a password. If you have changed your password, enter your custom password. Otherwise, enter the default “admin” in the Password field then click Login.
