Adding a wired computer to a Linksys router

To establish a connection to your router, a wired computer needs to have an ethernet adapter. You need to use a standard CAT5 ethernet cable to connect your computer to the router. This article assumes that the router has already been configured and other computers are online. Otherwise, set up the router first for DSL internet service.

Connecting a computer to the router

Connect one end of an ethernet cable to the ethernet port on the computer and connect the other end to any of the numbered ports at the back of the router.

Make sure that there is another ethernet cable connecting the modem and the router through the latter's internet port.

After connecting the devices, the router will automatically assign an IP address to your computer and you should be able to connect to the internet. If your computer is not online, you may need to check if it has the proper connection to your router.

TIP: You can set up a WiFi network by cascading a Linksys WiFi router to your existing wired router.
