How to resolve cache issues on your computer

Cache is online data that is temporarily stored in the computer and is designed to speed up certain activities such as web browsing by prioritizing its contents for quick access.  However, there are times when your computer gets slow or you experience connectivity issues because of too much cache that is stored.

This article will guide you on how to clear cache on your computer.

NOTE:  Windows 7 is used in this article as an example.

There are three (3) ways to clear cache:

DNS cache
Memory cache
Thumbnail cache

DNS cache

DNS cache clearing is done to make sure that the DNS sends a request to the website that you want directly and not to the stored cache on your computer.  Follow the steps below to learn how:

Step 1:
Go to the Start menu.

Step 2:
Enter “command prompt” in the Search field.

Step 3:
When the results show, right-click Command Prompt then select Run as administrator.

Step 4:
When the Command Prompt opens, enter “ipconfig/flushdns” then press the [Enter] button on your keyboard.

The DNS cache on your computer should now be cleared.

Memory cache

Clearing the Memory cache is useful when you notice that your computer is getting slower because of idle applications or programs.  Clearing this would free up unused Random Access Memory (RAM), making the computer increase its speed.  Follow the steps below to learn how:

Step 1:
Right-click on your Desktop and select New.

Step 2:
Choose Shortcut.

Step 3:
When the What item would you like to create a shortcut for? window appears, enter “%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks” in the available field.

Step 4:
Click Next.

You will then be asked to create a name for the shortcut.

Step 5:
Create a name then click Finish.

Step 6:
On your Desktop, double-click on the newly created shortcut.

A command prompt will then appear.

The Memory cache on your computer should now be cleared.

Thumbnail cache

Thumbnail cache clearing is done to free up some space on your disk.  Follow the steps below to learn how:

Step 1:
Go to the Start menu.

Step 2:
Enter “disk cleanup” in the Search field.

Step 3:
When the results show, click on Disk Cleanup.

Step 4:
Select the drive that you want to clean up from the drop-down list then click OK.

Step 5:
Once the Disk Cleanup for OS window appears, make sure Thumbnails is checked then click OK.

Step 6:
When prompted to delete, click Delete Files.

IMPORTANT:  The files will be permanently deleted once you confirm deletion.  Make sure to review the selected checkboxes before confirming.

The Thumbnails cache on your computer should now be cleared.
