The two types of dual-band routers

Dual-band routers are routers which are capable of transmitting and receiving data using both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies, either simultaneously or one at a time.

There are two types of dual-band routers:

  • Selectable
  • Simultaneous

Selectable

Selectable or plain dual-band routers can work on one frequency and allows you to select either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz at a time.

NOTE:  If you are selecting the 5 GHz wireless network, ensure that your wireless devices and adapters have a 5 GHz capability.  Otherwise, do not change the frequency of your router.  For instructions on how to check your wireless adapter’s capability, click here.

Simultaneous

Simultaneous dual-band routers are capable of receiving and transmitting on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies at the same time.  This provides two independent and dedicated networks which allows more flexibility and bandwidth.

NOTE:  To avoid interferences between the two wireless networks, personalize your router’s 5 GHz network SSID and password.  To learn how, click here.
