Resolving slow internet speed on multiple devices

The Linksys EA8100 supports speeds of up to 800 Mbps for the 2.4 GHz and 1733 Mbps for the 5 GHz band.  These let you swiftly stream videos, surf, play games online, chat, and email.  If you experience slow internet speeds on your devices, check on the common factors causing these issues and their recommended solutions below.

Check the physical connection between the modem and router

Check the physical connection between the modem and your Linksys EA8100.  Make sure to power ON your modem and connect an ethernet cable from the modem to the internet port of the Linksys EA8100.  Connect the power adapter to the router and turn it ON.  Ensure that the light corresponding to the port on the router where you had connected your modem is lit up and the cables are properly plugged in.

Check for physical obstructions and wireless interferences

Wi-Fi is susceptible to obstructions that may result in slow or poor internet connection.  Often, the signal gets reflected, refracted or absorbed by the obstruction.  Common obstructions include cabinets, mirrors, glasses, metal objects, thick walls, and ceilings.  If any of these objects are present, consider relocating your Linksys router somewhere high or in an elevated area to get around the obstruction.

Also, neighboring Wi-Fi or any appliance that operates on the same frequency as your wireless device (e.g. 2.4 GHz) may cause interference affecting your Wi-Fi connection and signal. These interferences can be:
  • Neighboring Wi-Fi
  • Microwave ovens
  • 2.4 GHz cordless telephones
  • Bluetooth® devices
  • Wireless baby monitors
To resolve this, change the wireless channel on your Linksys router.

Isolate the issue if happening only with wireless clients or for both wired and wireless devices

Check whether the poor connection only happens with wireless clients or for both wired and wireless devices.  If only the wireless devices experience poor connection, you may check the wireless capability of your device if it is disabled or not installed properly.  Otherwise, contact StarHub if both wired and wireless devices experience poor connection.

Power cycle the modem and/or router

To power cycle, unplug the modem, the Linksys router and the computer (in that order) from the power outlet.  Wait for 30 seconds before plugging them back in.  Re-plug the modem first followed by the router and then the computer.  Wait for the lights on all the devices to stabilize then check if the internet connection speed improves.

Check the firmware and consider performing an update

A firmware update contains encoded instructions to help improve the performance of your Linksys router.  It could also resolve issues that the previous firmware version may have.  The Auto Firmware Update feature which allows your router to automatically update whenever there is a new firmware available is enabled on the Linksys EA8100 by default.

Bypass the router and validate the internet speed through direct connection to the modem

If your devices at home are getting poor signal or internet connection from the Linksys router, try isolating the issue by connecting your computer directly to the modem through an ethernet cable.  If the computer gets connected to the internet and enjoys high speeds, check the wireless capability of your non-working device; it might be disabled or not installed properly.  If the issue still exists, contact StarHub for assistance.

Consider performing a reset and reconfiguration

There are two ways to reset the Linksys EA8100 to factory defaults:
  • Hardware Reset – Press and hold the Reset button on the back panel of the Linksys EA8100 for about 10 seconds.
  • Software Reset – Log in to your Linksys Cloud Account and under Router Settings, click Troubleshooting > Diagnostics.  Click Reset under Factory reset.
After resetting the Linksys EA8100, contact StarHub for setup assistance.
