WRT54GC Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is WRT54GC?
The WRT54GC is a Linksys Compact Wireless-G Broadband Router. It comes in a package with three (3) devices in one (1) small box. First, there's the wireless access point which lets you connect Wireless-G (802.11g at 54 Mbps) and Wireless-B (802.11b at 11 Mbps) devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Finally, the router function lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection.
2. Why is my computer unable to connect to the Internet?
Follow these instructions until your computer can connect to the Internet:
Make sure that the router is powered ON.
NOTE: The Power LED should be green and not flashing.
If the Power LED is flashing, power off all of your network devices, including the modem, router, and computers. Then power ON each device in the following order:
i. Cable or DSL modem
Check the cable connections.
NOTE: The computer should be connected to one (1) of the ports numbered 1-4 on the router, and the modem must be connected to the Internet port on the router.
3. What IP address, username and password are used to login to the WRT54GC?
The default IP address is 192.168.1.1. Leave the username blank and the password is admin.
4. How can I reset the WRT54GC to factory defaults?
There are two (2) ways to reset the router to factory defaults. Either press the Reset button for approximately 10 seconds, or restore the defaults from the Administration tab > Factory Defaults in the router's web-based setup page.
5. Can I connect my DSL telephone directly to the router’s Internet port?
The router does not replace your modem. You still need your DSL modem in order to use the router. Connect the telephone line to the DSL modem, and then insert the setup CD into your computer. Click Setup and follow the on?screen instructions.
6. When I double-click the web browser, I’m prompted for a username and password. What do I need to do to get rid of the prompt?
Launch the web browser and perform the following steps (these steps are specific to Internet Explorer but are similar for other browsers):
Select Tools > Internet Options.
Click the Connections tab.
Select Never dial a connection.
7. Can I connect the coaxial cable directly to the router’s Internet port?
The router does not replace your modem. You still need your cable modem in order to use the router. Connect your cable connection to the cable modem, and then insert the setup CD into your computer. Click Setup and follow the on?screen instructions.
8. Why is my computer unable to connect wirelessly to the Internet?
Make sure the wireless network name or SSID is the same on both the computer and the router. If you have enabled wireless security, then make sure the same security method and key are used by both the computer and the router.
9. What do I need to do to modify the settings on the router?
Open the web browser like Internet Explorer or Firefox and enter the router’s IP address in the address field (the default IP address is 192.168.1.1). When prompted, enter the password of the router (the default is admin). Click the appropriate tab to change the settings.
