Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) connection is a high-speed continuous digital connection to the Internet through regular phone lines. This service can leave your Internet connection open and still use the phone line for voice calls.
To set up your Linksys router with DSL Internet connection, you need to have the Username and Password given by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). These settings will be used by your router to connect to the Internet. You can also contact them if you are uncertain about the type of Internet connection you have.
QUICK TIP: There are DSL ISPs that provide a modem/router combination, a device that connects multiple computers to a single DSL line for Internet access. There are times when a modem/router conflicts with Linksys routers due to their IP address or their strict Network Address Translation (NAT) type. It is best to contact your ISP to verify if you are provided with a modem/router.
If you have a modem/router, you can configure your Linksys router in two (2) ways:
- Cascading of routers – This set up will allow you to connect two (2) routers with two (2) different networks.
- Setting the router to bridge mode – This set up will allow you to connect two (2) routers with just one (1) network. To learn more, click here.
To configure your router with the username and password given by your ISP, follow the steps below.
Connect an Ethernet cable from your computer to any of the numbered ports (1-4) at the back of the Linksys router. Do not connect anything to the Internet port for now.
Plug the power adapter to an electrical outlet and into the Linksys router.
QUICK TIP: Make sure that the power or product LED light is solid before proceeding to the next step.
Launch your web browser and enter “192.168.1.1” or “myrouter.local” in the Address bar. Press [Enter].
You will be prompted to access the router. Enter the router's administrative password (default is “admin”) and click Log in.
NOTE: If you have changed your router password, enter the new password instead. In case you have forgotten your router password, click here to learn how to retrieve it.
Click the Internet Settings tab and click Edit.
Set the Type of Internet Connection to PPPoE.
Enter the Username and Password provided by your ISP.
Click the button located at the lower-right corner of the page.
On the Applying Changes screen, click Ok.
Connect the modem to the Internet port of the Linksys router.
Once your router detects that there is Internet access, it will give you an Internet Restored prompt. Click Yes.
NOTE: If you do not have Internet access after connecting the modem to the Linksys router, powercycle the router for 30 seconds and reboot your computer.
You will be redirected to the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Sign In page. If you already created a Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account, enter your login credentials on the Email Address and Password fields and click Sign in.
NOTE: If you do not have a Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account, click on Create Account. For step-by-step instructions on how to create, activate and associate an account in Linksys Smart Wi-Fi, click here.
Please note that accessing the interface of your Linksys router in Bridge mode can only be done locally (from behind the router either wired or wireless).
Once you have logged back into your router, you can now proceed with securing your wireless network. For instructions, click here.
Expanding your network
You can also extend the range of your network, especially in situations that require you to do so. This is through the use of other networking devices from Linksys like powerline adapters.
