The Easy Setup Key is a USB flash drive that basically keeps a record of the settings on your Linksys X-series Gateway or Linksys Wi-Fi Router.
IMPORTANT: You can still install your Linksys X-series Gateway or Linksys Wi-Fi Router even without the Easy Setup Key. The Easy Setup Key is just a means to easily reconfigure the router with the same settings that were saved on it but isn't necessary for router installation. 2. Can I create my own personal Easy Setup Key with a regular USB flash drive?
Yes. You can easily create your own personal Easy Setup Key using a regular USB flash drive that is NTFS or FAT32 file system formatted. USB flash drives can be purchased from your local computer store. Converting a regular USB flash drive into an Easy Setup Key takes up around 20 MB of the drive's original capacity. So you still have plenty of space to store your photos, digital music, and personal files. Also, updating the Easy Setup Key will not affect other files in the USB flash drive.

3. Why do I need to keep my Easy Setup Key safe?
The purpose of the Easy Setup Key is to make connecting wireless computers to the network as easy as possible. Your Linksys Wi-Fi Router or Linksys X-series Gateway is the gatekeeper to your network and everything connected to it, including computers with personal data. So, be sure to keep the Key in a safe place.
4. Is it important to keep my Easy Setup Key up-to-date?
Yes. The Easy Setup Key is the easiest way to connect other wireless computers to your Linksys Wi-Fi Router or Linksys X-series Gateway. Each time you change your device’s name or password, you should update the Key to easily connect wireless computers to your router the next time. If you have an up-to-date Key, you won’t have to worry about retrieving your updated wireless settings on the computer where you have the Linksys Connect Software installed.
NOTE: Linksys Connect is also known as Cisco Connect.
5. What should I do if the other programs on the USB Key won't start automatically after creating an Easy Setup Key?
When you create an Easy Setup Key, the autorun.ini file on many flash drives is overwritten with the Linksys Wi-Fi Router or Linksys X-series Gateway program and settings. The autorun.ini file has instructions that tell your computer what programs to launch automatically. This file is updated when you create your Easy Setup Key to allow your device’s settings to run automatically whenever you insert the USB flash drive into a computer. If you have other programs on the drive, you can still navigate and open them manually.
NOTE: Make sure that you create a backup of the data in your USB flash drive to avoid losing the files or programs in it.
6. Why do I get an error message when I remove the Easy Setup Key from my computer?
When disconnecting your Easy Setup Key from your computer, you should always choose to eject it using the Safely Remove Hardware option. This prevents data loss and potential damage. For Windows computers, click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the task bar and follow the on-screen instructions to eject your Easy Setup Key. If you’re using a Mac® computer, select your Easy Setup Key in Finder then click File > Eject.
7. Can I use the Easy Setup Key to quickly restore my device's settings after I reset my Linksys Wi-Fi Router or Linksys X-series Gateway to its factory defaults?
Yes, if your Easy Setup Key was up-to-date with the current router settings before the reset, you can easily restore those settings.
First, make sure the power and Ethernet cables are plugged into your Linksys Wi-Fi Router or Linksys X-series Gateway. Then, insert the Easy Setup Key into your computer's USB port and it will automatically update your Linksys device’s settings to have the same settings that were saved in the Key. These settings include your device’s wireless network name and password. However, any Parental controls and Guest network settings will have to be reset.
8. Can I change my router or gateway's administrator password?
Yes, the router's password can be changed by accessing the web-based setup page of the router. To learn how, click here.
