Required password reset due to DNS hack

Why do I have to change my password?

We’re requiring all users to change their passwords because someone used email address and password combinations stolen from other websites to log in to some Linksys Smart Wi-Fi accounts.  Once logged in to an account, hackers change router settings and trick customers into downloading apps that pretend to track information about COVID-19.

Does that mean my account was hacked?


We can’t be sure about every account.  Out of an abundance of caution, we locked all Linksys Smart Wi-Fi accounts to prevent further intrusions.  Unfortunately, that means you have to change your password.

So, what do I do next?

Get a reset password link by going to https://linksys.com/reset.  Or you can do it by clicking on Forgot your password? in the Linksys app or Linksys Smart Wi-Fi in a browser. 

When you change your password, we will check your DNS settings, which were the target of this attack.  If those settings were altered, we will fix them for you.  It would also be a good idea to restart computers and mobile devices that have been connected to your network. 

Is that all I have to do?

That depends.  If you downloaded a “COVID-19 Inform App” your network is infected.  You need to get rid of this as soon as possible to prevent further impacts to your network.  Update your antivirus and malware programs and use them to scan your computers.

How can I prevent this from happening again?

Linksys is doing everything we can to make it tougher for the bad guys.  But there are no guarantees.  To protect yourself and your data, use a different password for each of your online accounts and keep all your connected devices up to date with the most current firmware.  Your network security is of the utmost importance to us.
