- PLEK500 Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the PLEK500?
The PLEK500 is a Powerline 1-port Kit that consists of two (2) PLE500 devices. The PLE500 is a Powerline Gigabit Ethernet adapter that has one (1) Ethernet port. One of these devices is typically used in a Powerline network to connect your network’s router to the household wiring. You can also use one of these in any room to connect one wired Ethernet device to your Powerline network.
2. What is the maximum data rate the PLE500 can support?
The supported data rate speed of a PLE500 is up to 500 Mbps.
3. Can PLE500 communicate with HomePlug 1.0 devices?
No. Devices that support HomePlug AV and AV2 cannot communicate with HomePlug 1.0 devices, but all HomePlug AV and HomePlug 1.0 devices can exist together on the same Powerline network.
4. What Powerline technologies are compatible with the PLE500?
Powerline technologies that are compatible with the PLE500 are HomePlug 1.1 and HomePlug AV.
5. Is the utility bundled with the PLE500?
The utility is not shipped with the product. It must be downloaded from the PLE500's product support page. To download, follow the steps below:
Go to the Linksys Support site and enter "PLE500" in the Search bar.
In the PLE500 page, scroll down and click the Download Software link under DOWNLOADS.
Click Hardware version 1.0 then click on the Download link under PLEK500 Windows Setup Software or PLEK500 Mac OS® Setup Software, depending on what computer you are using.
6. How to change the Network Key using the utility?
When changing the Network Key, you must have two (2) or more PLE500 connected and checked in order to share the Network Key between the PLE500's.
7. All my PLE500 devices are showing up as Local Device. Which one is the real Local Device?
When you connect a PLE500 directly to the computer, that PLE500 will display as Local Device in the Network Status tab. However, if you have two (2) PLE500 devices that are part of a network and your wireless adapter on the same computer is wirelessly connected to the same network, it will detect both devices as Local Device.
In order to find out which one is the actual Local Device for configuration purposes, you can check the MAC address of each PLE500 by looking at the label of the device. Verify it with the MAC address displayed on the Network Status tab then select the appropriate PLE500 to make your necessary changes.
NOTE: You can also disable your wireless adapter on your computer and click Refresh on the Network Status tab. You will now see only one PLE500 as Local Device.
8. How many PLE500 devices should I connect to my router?
Connect only one (1) PLE500 device to the router. All other PLE500 devices should be connected to other network devices such as access points, switches, or computers.
9. How do I upgrade the firmware on the PLE500?
When performing an upgrade on your PLE500, make sure to connect the device directly to the computer. It will show as Local Device on the Network tab. Select it and go to the Administration tab to perform the upgrade.
If you see more than one (1) device that shows up as Local Device, your Wi-Fi adapter is likely to be connected to the same network. Turn off the wireless adapter on your computer FIRST and identify the MAC address of the PLE500 device you are connected to.
When you highlight a PLE500 device, you will see the firmware version number of that PLE500 in the Detail Information section on the Network Status tab.
IMPORTANT: It is not recommended to upgrade the firmware on a remote PLE500 device when the computer is connected wirelessly. Use a wired connection for the PLE500 and the computer.
10. How can I reset the PLE500 via utility?
Select the PLE500 from the Network Status tab and verify the MAC address of the PLE500 device before clicking Restore on the Administration tab. Or, you can insert a paperclip or any pointed object into the Reset button of the PLE500 device and hold it down for about 10 seconds until the LEDs are flashing.
