Getting a weak signal on an iPad®

If you are getting a weak, wireless signal on your iPad®, it may be due to the following:

  • You may be too far or too close to your router
  • Physical obstructions which could block, reflect, refract or absorb the wireless signal from the router
  • Interferences from appliances that operate on the same frequency as your router

To resolve this issue, follow these troubleshooting tips.

Relocate your router

Physical obstructions such as glasses, thick walls and ceilings as well as metals may affect the wireless signal of your router.  Often, the signal gets reflected, refracted or absorbed by these obstructions.  To bypass these obstructions, relocate your router on an elevated area in the middle of your home or the establishment.

Change the wireless channel of your router

Interferences from appliances that operate in the same frequency as your router such as cordless phones, microwave ovens and neighboring wireless networks can also affect your wireless connection and signal.  To resolve this issue, avoid placing your router near these sources of interferences.  You can also change the channel of your router or access point to improve its wireless connectivity.  For detailed instructions on how to change the wireless channel of your router, click here.

QUICK TIP:  For Wireless-N Dual band routers, it is best to use 20 MHz when in a 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz populated area to avoid wireless interference.  For less crowded networks, you can use 40 MHz on a 5 GHz to your advantage.  If you're unsure, you may leave channel width at Auto.  This will automatically adjust the settings to 20 or 40 MHz, depending on which best fits your network.  To know the difference between 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, click here.

Remove your iPad® from its case

Your iPad®’s case, stand, or other attachments can also block or absorb the signal coming from your wireless router, causing it to get weak or fluctuating signals.  To improve your iPad®’s connection to the network, remove its case, stand or other attachments which may be covering the device’s wireless adapter or radio.

Move closer to the router

If you are getting a weak signal from your router, you may be out of your router’s wireless network range.  Try to move closer to your wireless router to improve your router’s wireless signal strength.  However, avoid moving closer than the 18 inch radius around your router as this is considered a wireless dead zone.
