Setting up the Linksys RE6800 AC1750 Wi-Fi Range Extender to Range Extender mode

The Linksys RE6800 AC1750 Wi-Fi Range Extender can be set up in three (3) ways: Setup Wizard, Manual and using Wi-Fi Protected Setup™ (WPS).  This article will show you the steps on how to set up the device to Range Extender mode using the Setup Wizard.
 
Before you start the setup process, make sure to have the following:
  • An active wireless network connection
  • Wireless network name (SSID) and wireless password of your existing wireless network

Step 1:
Plug the Linksys RE6800 into a power outlet.

NOTE:  Wait for the Light Emitting Diode (LED) to change to orange.  To learn more about this device’s LED behavior, click here.
 
Step 2:
Using a computer or a mobile device, connect your device to the Linksys RE6800’s default SSID, which is Linksys Extender Setup – xxx, where xxx are the last three (3) characters of the Linksys RE6800’s MAC address. 

QUICK TIP:  The MAC address of your Linksys RE6800 is located on the label at the back of the device. 


Step 3:
Open a web browser and enter "
http://ap.linksys.com" or "192.168.1.1" in the Address bar to launch the setup.
  
Step 4:
When the setup screen appears, tick the box beside the I accept the End User License Agreement, and click Start Setup.

Step 5:
Create an admin password and your password hint (optional) then click Save once done.

Step 6:
Select the As a wireless range extender option then click Next.

Step 7:
Select your existing wireless network and enter your password when prompted.

NOTE:  If you have a dual-band network, you should see the SSID of both bands.

QUICK TIP:  If you have a hidden SSID, click Manually Enter Network Name and Password.  Otherwise, wait until it detects your wireless network and select your network.

Step 8:
Create your extended Network names and wireless Passwords. 
Click the refresh User-added image icon to update the list

NOTE:  This is the wireless network your wireless clients will connect to.  You can use the same name for both networks.

Step 9:.
The Spot Finder feature determines the signal strength of your range extender to the root AP.  If it’s too far away, simply unplug it, move it closer and reconnect to the extenders’ default SSID and go to
http://ap.linksys.com.

Step 10:.
Your device will automatically check for the latest available firmware and update it.

Your Linksys RE6800 is now setup in Range Extender mode.

You will also receive instructions to view or change the Linksys RE6800’s settings.

When Linksys RE6800 is in Range Extender mode, the top header will read Dual Band Wireless Range Extender.  After setup, you can log into the web-based setup page to view the updated top header name.
