Overview of the External Storage feature of the Linksys MX5300 Velop AX Whole Home WiFi 6 System

This External Storage feature of the Linksys MX5300 Velop AX Whole Home WiFi 6 System allows you to connect an external storage device into the USB port on the node and share the entire drive.  

This Linksys MX5300 features one USB-3.0 port for storage drive.  If you have more than one of this Velop system, you can connect USB hard drives into each node. 

NOTE:  Virtual printing is not supported.

Supported file formats

This Velop system supports the following USB file formats:


Windows®:
NTFS and FAT32

Mac®:
APFS (Read only), FAT32, and HFS+

 

Linksys app view

To access the dashboard page, follow the instructions here.  Then, tap on the menu User-added image icon and go to External Storage.

The following settings will be displayed:

  • The node’s name (e.g., Family Room and Living Room)
  • The hard drive’s information:
    • The name of the hard drive 
    • The storage used
    • The total storage capacity of the hard drive
    • The IP address of the drive
  • The Refresh button (located at the External Storage header)
  • The Eject icon – Tap on  User-added image to ensure that your hard drive will be safely removed, and file corruption prevented.
  • Authentication - To enable it, tap on the menu icon, then tap on External  Storage > Authentication and toggle the sliding switch to the right.

Web interface view

To access the dashboard page, follow the instructions here.  Then, go to External Storage under Smart Wi-Fi Tools.

The following settings will be displayed:

Authentication

When Authentication is ON, access to the storage device will be available only to those who have the username and password that you have set.  Authentication is disabled by default.

Authentication requirements:

The username should have a minimum of four and maximum of 12 alphanumeric characters while the password should have a minimum of four and maximum of 50 alphanumeric characters.  Both can include valid characters such as an underscore ( _ ) or a dash ( — ).

 

Network File Sharing (SMB)

Computers within your Velop system can access the storage device connected to the node/s. 

For Windows computers:

Enter “\\” followed by the IP address of the storage drive you want to access into the Windows Explorer field, then hit [ENTER].  

NOTE:  The IP address is displayed in the External Storage section of your Linksys MX5300 (either in the Linksys app or the web interface). 

In the example below, “\\192.168.1.1” is used.

For Mac computers:

Navigate to Go > Connect to Server… and enter “smb://” followed by the IP address of the storage drive you want to access, and then click Connect.  

NOTE:  The IP address is displayed in the External Storage section of your Linksys MX5300 (either in the Linksys app or the web interface). 

In the example below, “smb://192.168.1.1” is used.
