Setting up WEP on a Linksys Wireless Adapter in Windows® 98SE, ME, 2000 and XP

This article will help you set up the Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) on a Linksys Wireless Adapter in Windows® 98SE, ME, 2000 and XP.  Follow the steps below to know how.

Windows® 98SE, ME and 2000

NOTE:  Have your Wi-Fi's WEP key or Passphrase ready.

Step 1:
Double click on the Linksys WLAN Monitor icon next to the clock on the Start bar.

Step 2:
When the Linksys WLAN Monitor window appears, click the Profiles tab.

Step 3:
Click on Default under the Profile, then click on the Edit button.

Step 4:
Keep clicking the Next button until the Wi-Fi name (SSID) area is reached.  Make sure that the Wi-Fi name in the SSID field is correct.  Then, click Next.

Step 5:
When the Security Settings appears, change the WEP option to the level of WEP that the Wi-Fi is using, either 64-bit (which has a 10 character WEP key) or 128-bit (which has a 26 character WEP key).

Step 6:
Enter the WEP Key in the Key 1 field, or the Passphrase into the Passphrase field.

NOTE:  The Passphrase is case-sensitive.

Step 7:
Click the Next button and the Confirm New Settings window will appear.  Click on either the Next or Yes button.

Step 8:
The Congratulations screen will appear.  Click on the Activate New Settings Now button.

Windows® XP

NOTE:  Have your Wi-Fi’s WEP key or Passphrase ready.

Configuring WEP on an existing connection
 
Step 1:
Click on the Start button and click on Control Panel.

NOTE:  You can also click on Start > Run.  Enter ncpa.cpl in the Open field, and then click OK.


Step 2:
When the Network Connections window opens, right click on the Wireless Network Connection icon and select the Properties option.

Step 3:
Click on the Wireless Networks tab.

Step 4:

Go to the Preferred networks pane and click on your Wi-Fi name.  Then, click the Properties button.

Step 5:
Check the option for  Data Encryption (WEP enabled) or click on the Data Encryption dropdown box then select WEP.

Step 6:
Uncheck the This key is provided for me automatically box.
 
Step 7:
Enter your Wi-Fi's WEP Key into the Network Key and Confirm network key fields.

QUICK TIP:  If you are using 128-bit WEP, type the key into a document first and then copy and paste it in the Network Key and Confirm network key fields.

 
Configuring WEP on a new connection
 
Step 1:
Click on the Start button and click on Control Panel.

NOTE:  You can also click on Start > Run.  Enter ncpa.cpl in the Open field, and then click OK.

Step 2:
Right click on the Wireless Network Connection icon and click on the View Available Wireless Networks option.

Step 3:
Click your Wi-Fi name
.

Step 4:

Enter your WEP Key in the Network Key and Confirm network key fields.

Step 5:
Click on the Connect button.

 
You have now set up WEP on your Linksys Wireless Adapter.
