Getting to know the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, EA4500

What is the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, EA4500?

The Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router N900 Media Stream, EA4500 lets you access the Internet via wired and wireless connection.  The features of this router include:

Wireless speed – The Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, EA4500, has transfer rates of up to 450 + 450 Mbps to connect your devices at ultra fast speed.

Gigabit Ethernet – It has four (4) Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000) ports for quick file sharing between other Gigabit-enabled devices like computers, hard drives, and servers.

Superior wireless coverage – Built with leading 802.11n wireless technology, the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, EA4500 has Full 3x3 MIMO antenna array which boosts signal strength on 2.4 and 5 GHz radios.

Dual-band technology – It doubles your network bandwidth with its simultaneous dual-band Wireless-N 2.4 and 5 GHz designed to avoid interference and maximize throughput for smoother and faster HD video streaming, file transfers, and wireless gaming.

Built-in USB Port – Capable of supporting one (1) external HD or USB printer.

Guest Access – The Guest Access feature makes sharing Internet access to other wireless devices possible, while maintaining maximum security to your home network.  It allows you to provide Internet access up to 50 guests visiting your home without granting them access to your local network.  To learn more about setting up the Guest Access Tool using the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Account, click here.

Power Indicator light – Stays lit when power is connected and a successful Wi-Fi Protected Setup™ (WPS) connection is established.  It slowly blinks during boot up and while performing firmware upgrade.  The light flashes quickly when there is a WPS error.

 Ethernet 1-4 (Yellow and Green) – These Ethernet ports connect the router to computers and other Ethernet network devices on your wired network using Ethernet cables.  The yellow light flashes to indicate network activity over that port.  The green light turns ON when the local network port is connected to a 10/100/1000 port with auto-MDIX.

 Internet (Yellow and Green) – Using an Ethernet cable, the Internet port connects the router to your Internet connection, which is typically a Cable or Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) modem.  The yellow light flashes to indicate network activity over that port.  The green light turns ON when the Internet port is connected to a 10/100/1000 port with auto-MDIX.

 Wi-Fi Protected Setup™ (WPS) buttonIf you have client devices, such as wireless printers, that support Wi-Fi Protected Setup™, you can press the WPS button to automatically configure the wireless security of your wireless network.  To know how to connect devices using the WPS feature, click here.

USB port – With a USB storage device, you can easily share disk storage with other users in your network.  The USB 1.1 standard supports a speed of up to 12 Mbps.  The USB 2.0 standard supports a speed of up to 480 Mbps.

QUICK TIP:  The USB port supplies up to 1000 mA power on devices.  It is also FAT32, NTFS, HFS+journaled and non-journaled capable for data storing formats.

NOTE:  The router also supports connection to a USB printer.  You will also need the latest version of Linksys Connect to be able to make use of this functionality.  The firmware installs after a prompt upon running Linksys Connect.  To learn how to download Linksys Connect, click here.  For instructions on how to connect a USB printer to your router using Linksys Connect, click here.

 Reset button – This button allows you to reset the router to its factory defaults.  Press and hold the Reset button for approximately 10 seconds.  This button is located between the USB and Power ports.  As an alternative, you can restore the defaults from the Administration tab > Factory Defaults sub-tab in the router’s web-based setup page.

 Power – The Power port connects to the power adapter.

Firmware:

The new Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router, EA4500, has an Auto Firmware Update feature.  With this, you will also be able to restore a previously loaded firmware.  For more information, click here.
