How to manually upgrade a Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router's firmware

Firmware updates are bug fixes and functionality enhancements for the router.  Keeping the firmware of your Linksys device updated will fix issues you may have encountered while using it.  An updated firmware downloaded from the Linksys Support site may also contain device feature enhancements that are not available in the previous versions.

Step 1:
Download the latest firmware of your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router and save it in your computer.  For instructions, click here.


IMPORTANT:  If the firmware you downloaded is a .zip file, you need to unzip it before you proceed with the upgrade process.

NOTE:  The name of the file may vary depending on the firmware file of your device.


Step 2:
Access your Linksys cloud account.  For instructions, click here.

Step 3:
Click Connectivity.

Step 4:
Under the Firmware Update section, click the User-added image button.
 
Step 5:
Select the file you have downloaded and click Open.


NOTE:  If you're using a Mac® computer, select the file that you have downloaded.  Then, click Open.

Step 6:
Click the User-added image button.

Step 7:
On the Update firmware pop-up box, click Yes.  Your router will start updating the firmware.
 
NOTE:  During this process, do NOT turn OFF your router or close the browser window.

Step 8:
A Router Reboot screen will pop up.  Click Ok to continue.
 
NOTE:  The router reboot process usually takes a few minutes.

Step 9:
On the Firmware update complete screen, click Ok.

Your router's firmware should now be updated.
 
Turning OFF Auto-Updates​


The Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Routers also have an Auto Firmware Update feature which automatically updates the router whenever there is a new firmware available.  If you want to prevent your router from receiving automatic firmware updates, you will need to turn OFF the Automatic Firmware Update feature.  Follow the steps below:

 
Step 1:
Log in to the router’s web-based setup page.  To do this you can either enter 192.168.1.1 or myrouter.local in the Address bar or go to www.linksyssmartwifi.com and enter your Linksys cloud account credentials then press [ENTER].

Step 2:
On the Linksys cloud account page, click the Connectivity Tool.

Step 3:
On the Basic tab, uncheck the box beside Automatic under Firmware Update then click Ok.

NOTE:  To turn ON automatic firmware updates again, check the box beside Automatic and click Ok.
